We had other brothers and sisters, but, even though there are four years between us, we were somehow always closest to each other, they agreed. When Tanna called and suggested I enter the contest, I thought it would be really fun to do it with her, said Jewel. We really dont feel any pressure to compete, said Tanna. Its fun to help each other, selecting our gowns and accessories, shopping and sewing together and cheering each other on. We dont care if either of us wins by Olga Milius Green Sheet Staff Writer GRANGER. In this Smith are Liberty Reflections Important my ability as a photographer and she touched my imagination as I reflected on what it must have been like for those tired, poor, huddled masses longing to be free who saw her standing in the harbor as they approached their destination. From Libertys View is serving as the theme for the annual Reflections contest sponsored by PTA organizations throughout the nation. It is a fitting theme, especially in this 200th anniversary year of the statues placement in the New York Harbor, coupled with the completion of the restoration project designed to preserve The Lady for perhaps :, another 200 years. I had the opportunity last week of speaking to some elementary school students about the literary portion of that contest, and I was pleased to discover that todays students still seem to revere those ideals about just how important liberty is, and what it means to be a citizen of this great nation. It was clear as we carried on a dialogue that the students had been exposed to considerable information about not only this important symbol of liberty, but also about how fortunate we are to live here. Michele Bartmess fautd dont know if any of them were my progenitors or not. But it doesnt matter. I While symbols are only that, they do serve to remind us occasionally about those things that are impor- tant. I took my first trip out to the island in 1976, a year in which patriotism was, of course, heightened by the nations Bicentennial celebration. We saw many things on that trip that were meaningful to this nation, spending nearly a week in Washington, D. C. But I can honestly say that none of them impressed me more than did the Statue of Liberty. She challenged It doesnt take a genius to figure out that without the contributions of this country those freedom-seekersimply wouldnt be what it is today. I suppose its even possible that it might not be free. I often reflect on what a great blessing it is to have been born in America, and I wonder if thats just chance or if it has something to do with the eternal scheme of things. Thats why it was so refreshing to hear those young students share some of their perceptions of what liberty means. As they prepare their Reflections entries in the visual arts, music and prose or poetry, they will have a chance to express these important feelings. Contest rules specify that it must be entirely their own work, but that doesnt mean that they cant be encouraged. It offers a prime opportunity for families to discuss the subject and to reinforce those ideals the youngsters have studied in school. As the children put their creative juices to work, I suspect that some outstanding entries will be produced. Hats off to the PTA for selecting a theme so worthy of promoting.
