Taylorsville will face its second straight tough outing when it takes its double wing to Olympus to face the defending state champs who thrive on the big play offense and a defense that gives ground grudgingly. The key to victory on Friday for the Warriors was taking turning Pirate mistakes into points. The Pirate defense was on the field all afternoon and the tone of the game was set when in a 41 second span in the first period the Warriors scored two touchdowns. After Dave Vandevegaete knocked the ball out of a Pirate runners hands at the 35, the Warriors began to dominate line play and four plays later Doug Clements slipped in from the nine for the first Taylorsville TD. Not even a minute had elapsed when Kevin Newby popped through a huge hole at the 18 to score standing up. Mike Johnson set up the play with a fumble recovery, the first of three takeaways he would get. Exactly one minute later, 2:26, Johnson intercepted a Buc pass and it would have been 21-- 0 had not two passes been dropped in the endzone. It was the fourth time the Warriors had been inside the Pirate 20 in the first period. Cyprus had a chance to get back in the game in the second period, driving the ball inside the 12 with time running out, but the Warriors stiffened and that may have been the game for Coach Bill Hunters squad. A long Warrior drive in the third period was capped with a Jim field goal with 5:13 Wayman left. Taylorsville controlled the ball from the opening kickoff to that point. A Ryan Brown to Robert Stoner completion took the Warriors to the five. A holding penalty wiped out the score, but Brown hooked up with Dave Trevino with 40 seconds left in the period for a 24-- 0 lead. Cyprus finally got on the board when Sid Freeman galloped 20 yards with 7:25 left in the game. The completion, but on both occasions the Warriors snuffed out the PAT tries. Hunter was clearly concerned. Nothing was in sync, he stated. Pirates Travis Bailey recovered the obvious onside kick and the Bucs were able to tack on another score on a Brent Raby to Craig Sudbury Well know what kind of a football team we are Friday.
