When chemotherapy is needed, Jason has to spend as much as five days each time in the hospital, his mother explained. He bruises very easily and cant get out much this summer, she said. An enthusiastic student at South Kearns elementary, Jason had to drop out of school soon after the disease was diagnosed, but has had a home tutor, who has been of tremendous help and support to him. He would have been looking forward to entering fourth grade in the fall and still is anxious for the day to come when he can return to his classroom and friends. Doctors have told the Simmonses that Jason needs a bone marrow transplant to give him a 60 percent chance of survival. Without it, his chances shrink to 30 percent. The operation will be done as soon as the hospital has room available for Jason and Misty. We just wait every day for that phone call. When it comes, we have to just get ready and go immediately, his mother said. The timing of the operation is crucial since it must be performed while the leukemia is in remission. Since Jasons diabetic condition makes remission difficult to maintain, the family is hoping the call will come soon, hopefully later this week.
