Show 1C THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, October 11, 1984 Murals Help Beat The Space Squeezej Putting up a photo mural is one of the niftiest ways to beat the space squeeze. You can go with views from mountains, meadows, forests or beaches to transform your walls into some choice vacation spot and, at the same time, add acres galore to the actual boundaries of the room. Its all an optical illusion, of ; course, and the concept is actually centuries old. French art patrons used to commission painters to adorn their walls with fantasies. This type of art was known as trompe loeil, which literally means trick of the eye. And, it was terribly expensive. Today, the highly developed techniques of the camera is combined with artistic lithography. The result is finely detailed renderings that emphasize the illusion of texture and spatial qualities. All very affordable as well as scrubbable and strippable. Those old French aristocrats would have eaten their hearts out if they could have seen the lake view. Its so real you can almost hear the water ripple. The photo murals that lead the eye furthest beyond the wall will have the highest amount of spaceexpanding qualities. Typical photo scapes are 138 long, and what to do if the wall isnt that long is a much-aske- d question from decorators. You f,.' might leave out part of the mural, or furniture styles. Con across shades or blinds. There's even a Venetian blind system, which makes it possible to insert wallcoverings in the slats, thus creating an uninterrupted pattern around a room. A flush door is easily covered to match the walls. Putting real plants in front of a photo murals greenery enhances its realism. What view to pick? Only you can make that decision. But experts offer some food for thought: Going by your favorite season is a good bet. Some people feel spring is a great tonic. Others find it disquieting. Some love the mellow moods of autumn. Others find it sad. Is there a mural, which reminds you of a particularly happy time? Then that should be your choice. of the And, keep the temperatures murals in mind, too. And like most people, reading is$n important part of their lives. In fact, they spend a good part of their days with book or paper in hand: Johnny and Janie at school, Mom and Dad at the office and Grandma and Grandpa at the local hospital where they do volunteer work. But theres a dark side to their lives. By day, they are all well-reaBut when they come home at night, they have difficulty reading. Oh. they try. They really do. They squint. They strain. They hold the book or newspaper this way, then that. They sit up straight. They scrunch down. But nothing works. Quite simply, they need help. And they can get it in the form of a good reading lamp. ilWhile this tale of be somewhat exagliteracy may gerated, the value of a good reading lamp is not. The right lamp can literally shed new light on any subject. The sensors in the eyes that allow us to read are activated by color contrasts, like those created by dark type on a white page. Under poor lighting conditions, those sensors become less sensitive and we have to work harder to see. The result can be eye strain and, many times, severe headaches. No, no one has ever really gone blind from reading in too-dilight, despite what your mother may have told you. But millions of American families are subjecting their eyes to unnecessary wear and tear with inappropriate reading and study lights. How can you determine the right kind of light? Whether you choose a table or floor-styl- e lamp for reading, the height of the lamp (including table height) should always be 40 to 49 inches from the floor, with the bottom of the shade just at or below eye level, to prevent reflected glare. Proper light distribution is essential. A good study shade should be at least 14 inches in diameter at the bottom and 8 inches at the top. Shades should be light in color and dense enough to prevent spot glare V L1GHTING . . . Using the right kind of light will help eliminate unnecessary wear and tear on the eyes. from the bulb. It is recommended that you use translucent materials for a shade, such as silk or muslin, white laminated to a matte-finislinen. Placement is key. The best position for a lamp is to the left or right of reading material 15 inches from the work center for a desk top lamp. Bulbs make a difference. For the e best reading light, choose bulbs (they're easier on the eyes) that are 150 to 200 watts. h soft-whit- SATELLITE DISHES EARTH X STATIONS RED U 4x4x8 So $ BEST 4x4x8 GOOD 2x4x8 BEST I 1x4x6 B PAINT Semi-Glos- s, BEST r.9. $4.79 NOW Reg. 3.99 NOW Reg. 1.79 NOW Reg. 89 NOW Reg. 12.95 Int.Ext. ui3!2 x 15 Insulation 5 Kraft Faces R-- ll Roll (50 sq. yd.)
