You all know that Cyprus is the home of the Pirates. And Im sure youve all heard people refer to our building as a ship Right? Have you ever wondered why? Well, I did some asking and, with the help of a few staff members and former students, this is what I found out. When Cyprus was built, the coppermine was at its peak Ken-neco- ot as one of the most productive copper mines in the western United States. Since the mine was such an important part of the Magna community, employing at least one member of almost every household, it was suggested that the new high school have a name reflecting that part of Magnas history. The island of Cyprus, located west of Greece, was also a main provider of copper in the East. Begin surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, this isle was once a harbor for wandering Pirates. Therefore, it was decided that the new high school would be called Cyprus and that the mascot would be the mighty Pirate. Our buiding was to become our ship, complete with its own galley. Soon, the students began to name everything using Pirate jargon. For example, did you know that a is a spinnaker decorated sail, carrying the emblem of their ship? Through the years, our sturdy vessel has sailed through rough waters, including wars, fire, bomb threats and several false fire alarms. Recently, she was even taken to harbor for reconstructing. But with our mighty Pirate spirit, we rose to conquer. So next time someone asks you which high school you go to, be proud to tell them Cyprus high. hope to prepare this years sophomores to become juniors and seniors, so when we are in these grade levels we can make KHS sophomore OConnor. at Hillside elementary will participate in a unique fire drill Wednesday. Representatives from the West Valley City Fire Department will teach the children how to crawl out of a burning building, according to PTA spokesman Laura Church. The students have always been taught conventional ways of escape during fire drills, she explained. We feel it is important that they know when it is necessary to crawl to escape and how to do it. A bus safety assembly will be presented on Oct. 22, with a bus being brought to the school for use by second and sixth grade students in the demonstration. The game against Skyline Friday put Granite into the playoffs for football. The Farmers pulled through with the old Granitian attack and left Skyline on the short end of a 20-score. Winning this game gives Granite a chance at the state championships at the end of the season. We appreciate the spirit of the stu-debody at the football game, but wwpqld, toalso, .like to encourage get involved with the everyone 6 other sports, too. Our girls tennis team competed in the Region Three tournament last week. The girls volleyball will play Granger at 4 oclock Tuesday here at Granite. Our golf team, will compete in the state tournament at 9 am. on Wednesday. Dont forget there is no school today (Thursday) and tomorrow because of UEA and Oct. 19 for fall recess. Take advantage of these days off. Students president Pat class Pat will lead this years sophomores, with the assistance of his fellow officers, which include Richard Kuecher, vice president; Michelle secretary; Labrum, activities f'Wo d toward the worthy cause of scholarships for seniors at the end of. the year This will be a short week at because of the Utah Education Associations teacher convention which will be held today (Thursday) and tomorrow. Because of UEA, '.the KHS football game and cross country meet against Jordan took place yesterday and, therefore, there Will be no football action Friday. The KHS football team recently suffered two losses to Bingham gpd Alta and these defeats seem ironic considering the great ability which the team displayed at the first ofthe season. When asked why the team started out so well, yet has appeared to gradually lose some ability, player Terry Morgan stated, Fidst of all, Bingham and Alta were jour two toughest games and we lost Jo them because of their greater $e and ability. Secondly, we, as a team, lost all confidence after the first couple of games because we played bur hardest and we were so close, yettve still lost I guess, in a sense, bur hearts have been broken. Teity v Continued on page 5 commented new known, Araceli Rojas, female ASK and Richard Neilsen, male ASK. During the election of these individuals, the KHS election committee was particularly pleased with the superior academic and leadership records of these new officers and the committee believes that these sophomores will prove to be true leaders for their class.
