There was hope mixed with heartbreak for the Kearns high football team Friday when - the Cougars lost their second overtime encounter in as many league outings, by the slim margin of a field goal. Taylorsville escaped the Cougar Homecoming game with a hard-foug0 victory when Keith field goal to Lever kicked a end the second overtime as darkness closed in on the stadium. It was by far the best offensive showing for the Cougars, while Taylorsville continued to suffer from the turnover bug. The game prompted Taylorsville mentor Doug Bills to predict that Kearns is going to win some games. They played a heckuva game. The Cougars will be out to do just that against another team that has had a string of bad luck. Tomorrow (Friday) Kearns is slated to be the Homecoming guest at Bingham high. Bingham has lost its last two contests by an eyelash in the late going - fumbling away a chance at Alta Friday. Game time is slated at 5p.m. ht GREEN SHEET END ZONE I . Action came right before half. with eight Cougars ahead minutes left in the contest. Taylorsville, which was plagued with fumbles, came back to tie the score with three minutes left when Trevino gathered in another pass and Lever booted the PAT. Taylorsville faces a pivotal contest against Hillcrest, a battle for the league lead. Brighton 17-1- 6 20-1- 3 Hillcrest nipped Friday to move to 2-- We could win the thing right here, Bills said, referring to the league championship. Certainly the winner will be in the catbird seat. Taylorsville struck first when Doug Clements capped a drive with a four-yar- d plunge. The Cougars struck back with their best drive of the season, going 85 yards in eight plays. Ken Carillo took the ball over from the two and Taani Tai knotted the score at seven, which stood up at half-timAgain the Warriors took the lead on a circus catch of a pass by Dave Trevino of a Ryan Brown toss, but the Cougars blocked Levers e. The Cougars held the Warriors in the first overtime when the Warriors fumbled for the fifth time, but a Cougar field goal try missed to the left. In the second OT, the Cougars had a penalty, loss of yardage and an incompleted pass before trying another field goal, which was just Vide. That left it up to Lever, who booted his game-winnon second down after the officials warned the coaches that the game would be called because of darkness. er Taylorsville had 118 yards rushing against the Cougars and 208 through the airways on 14x28 completions. In a turnaround from last weeks PAT. Kearns then found itself in the unaccustomed position of leader moments later on a trick play that touchdown. Tai resulted in a flipped the ball to Troy Kehoe, who tossed it downfield to Troy Staley who streaked home and Tai put the Cougars ahead with another PAT conversion. Kearns might have won the game outright, but for a blocked PAT on a second score by Carillo that put the scoreless regulation against Brighton, the Cougars had 396 yards of offense. Carillo ran for 159 yards on 27 carries. Nafe Alusa and Kehoe were credited with fumble recoveries and Carillo picked off a Warrior pass. Tim Rogers was cited for his defensive play for the Warriors. Lancers Ruin CHS Homecoming Tooele Stuns Bulldogs 13-- 7 MAGNA. Coach Mike Granger Fraser put a damper on his alma maters Homecoming Friday night as his Lancers blanked Cyprus It was the third straight win over Cyprus for Fraser, who immediately turned his attention to unbeaten Cottonwood. It could be that the Lancer offense turned its attention to that game a bit early - gaining the lead early in the game, but accomplishing little in the second half. 21-- 21-- 0 Cottonwood will host the Lancers in a 4:30 test tomorrow (Friday). The Colts opened league play with an impressive win over Skyline. Cyprus will travel to Granite for a 7:30 contest, Homecoming guests of the Farmers. The Farmers were blanked 24-- by Olympus Friday. It 0 could be a long season for the loser. Granger dominated the Pirates thoroughly, holding them to a net total of 13 yards offense. Cyprus was able to pass for 75, but sacks brought the rushing total to a negative 86. In the meantime, the Lancer offense was sharp in the early going and rolled to 305 yards behind balanced running and passing. The Lancers got the ball on the Pirate 35 after a short punt and Mike Wilding covered the distance in six plays, scoring from the six with 6:43 left in the first period. There were still 48 seconds left in that period when Wilding bulled his way in again, this time from the two. Wayne Buchanan kicked the PAT after both scores. The third Lancer touchdown came in the second period on a pass play from Joe Candelaria to Chad Nelson. Typical of the second half was an instance where Granger had first and goal from the three and ended up back at the 25 after a series of penalties. The Lancers were penalized 18 times for 150 yards. We lost our intensity and I wasnt happy about that, Fraser related. Player of the game honors for the Lancers on the offensive unit went to lineman Jerome Hansman. Nelson was also lauded, catching three passes for 77 yards. Wilding rushed for 113 on 18 carries. Defensively, Fraser named Troy Yiatris player of the game. He had two fumble recoveries, three sacks and a pass deflection. Brian Baker, Chuck Crowton and the defensive secondary also gained praise. Wilding had a pass interception and Todd Maldonado a fumble recovery. matchThe Cottonwood-Grange- r up is an interesting one. Since coming into the league, the Lancers have posted a 0 mark against the Colts. Both teams are solid, boasting camgood success in the paign. They brought totally different looks into the season, however. The Lancers had just four lettermen back from last years squad, while Cottonwood returned a host of starters who remember a 34-- loss to the Lancers. 5-- pre-leag- 0 SALT LAKE. Tooele struck in the waning seconds of Friday nights contest at Judge to hand the Bulldogs a 13-- 7 setback in the region opener for both squads. The Bulldogs, who must play without quarterback Tony Cordova, in addition to four players who face one more week of academic suspension based on Judges rules, not the states, will host a reeling Murray squad tomorrow (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. for Homecoming. Murray, after handing Taylorsville its only loss of the season, has lost three straight, including a 31-- setback at Jordan Friday. Despite the loss of Cordova and the others, Coach Frank LEtoile is welcoming back several injured players, and thinks his team will respond to the challenge of getting and staying in the top division of the league. Cordova is replaced by Buddy Mele. Cordova injured his hand in a field goal kicking drill last Wednesday, underwent minor surgery, and is expected to return before the end of the regular season. Some of Judges offensive problems Friday could be attributed to the fact that Mele and center Kevin Moore had not had an opportunity to adequately prepare for the game. Moore was seeing his first action since being injured. Judge had five fumbles in the contest. One of those, however, proved to 0 Kearns KEARNS. Thad Jensen, Brian Larson and J.L.
