Show 3 Thursday, Sept. THE GREEN SHEET 13, 1984 gpoirtts Alta Holds Off Late Charge WEST VALLEY.We dodged a bullet. Alta football coach Doug Berrys opening comment caught the spirit of his teams trip to Granger Friday, but wasn't completely accurate. Granger will continue in preleague play tomorrow (Friday), but Alta must open Region Two action at Taylorsville. In reality, the Hawks dodged not one, but two shots Friday from the Lancers, who, in the final two minutes of play threatened to break Altas tenuous hold on a lead. At the 1:30 mark of the fourth period, Granger followed its final touchdown with a try for two points and a one-poilead, but the attempt came up short. Then with just 21 seconds left, the Lancers were forced to go for a field goal that just missed. 22-2- 1 Coach Berry commended Grangers effort, but voiced some concern about his own team's per- formance. Granger really played well against us, Berry stated. They certainly looked well prepared. But, our kids looked a little flat, not up to their performance against Jordan. Were going to be working hard this week to get back to that form. Though hurt by the loss, Granger coach Mike Fraser was full of praise for his players. Im really proud of the kids,he reported. Ive never had a team play so well. Granger took possession on tne opening kick and wasted little time in lighting up the scoreboard as quarterback Joe Candelaria threw a 63 yard touchdown pass to Jeff Lund. Moments later, Mike Wilding threw the halfback pass to Lund for two more. Granger mounted another strong drive on its next series, but was forced to a halt at the Hawk 30 when a hit by Altas Russ Draper jarred the ball loose and teammate Todd Rodriquez recovered. Alta capitalized on a 27 yard touchdown pass from Tyler Petitt to Troy Long. Altas try for two points failed, however. Granger bounced back with a second quarter drive highlighted by runs of 12, 15, eight, 17, and four yards by Wilding and capped with a 45 yard scoring pass to Lund. Wayne 15 and 55 yards and threw to Jim Vasquez for 26 more. Altas Long made the saving stop at the six, recounted Granger coach Mike Frasier. We had only 21 seconds left and no time outs so we had to go for the field goal right then. It just barely missed. Granger outgained Alta 404 to 263 and picked up 15 first downs to Altas 11. Mark Frkovich gained 89 of Altas 151 yards on the ground, while in the air, Petitt hit on eight of 18 for 112 yards. Long caught three passes for 40 yards. Defensively, coach Berry noted the play of Darren Handley, Long, and Russ Parry. Wilding was the leading rusher on the day, picking up 165 yard on 26 carries. Hansen added 45 on nine rushes. Joe Candelaria threw for 215 yards, completing six of 11 passes with Lund hauling in three for 127. On defense, coach Fraser felt Troy Yiatras and Brian Baker played tremendously and added praise for for his defensive line of Jerome Hansman, Anthan Peterson, Chuck Crowton, and Brad Warr. Nelson for gains of Buchanan kicked the point after. Alta cut the lead to one on a three yard touchdown run and a two point conversion by Long. A 36 yard draw play and a 20 yard pass reception by Chad Ogden were the big plays in the drive. The score at the half Alta took the lead in the third period following recovery of a fumbled punt at the Lancer 15. Petitt scored the six pointer on a one yard plunge and Brian McQuivey kicked the extra point. Granger shifted into high gear for the final four minutes of play. Using just Vk minutes, Granger moved to the Alta 18 from where Doug Hansen scored and Fraser went for the win, feeling Alta would have the advantage in a It took Granger just over half a minute to get the ball back and only 37 seconds to pass its way to the Hawk six.
