Friends and relatives are being invited to call from 6:30 to 9:30 in the evening at the Pioneer Hall, 1140 West 7800 South, and the family is requesting no gifts. Anton might not walk as briskly today as he did on May 29, 1934 when the two of them were married in St. Theresas Catholic Church in Midvale, but his cane is simply an outward sign of the type of work he has done all his life and of the accidents which came with that game when he was young. As a young man, in 1930, he worked below ground in the mines of Carbon County. He was with the New Peerless coal mine when they hit a gas pocket and the entire section exploded. The men and their families knew that such an event meant death and injury and any who escaped were lucky. Anton was one of the lucky ones that day and helped carry out the dead and injured until he, too, collapsed because of the lethal gas in the passage ways. Five were killed alongside him that long ago day and four badly injured. He lost his hearing and to this day carries the effects of that explo-- . sion. It wasnt long before he moved to Midvale to work in the nearby Bingham Mine and twas there he and Frances met and married. Accidents, however, were fairly common in those days, and their occurrence were the catalyst that brought about the stringent safety laws now current in mining. While working at the Armstrong Mine there, Anton tells, I dont know what happened and never will know, but either something dropped down from a higher level and hit me, or the ground gave way below my feet, but all I know is that I fell 160 feet down a shaft and was lucky to live through it. I had three more accidents in the mines, he tells, with the last in 1962, but once you start mining, it gets in your blood and nothing can keep you out of them. Once a miner, always a miner is the way it goes. Their home was in Murray while they raised their family, but progress arrived and the took that home.
