Winners have been announced in the Bennion junior high ski festival. The event, sponsored by the school media center, was designed to offer students an opportunity to take part in winter activities and lifetime learning, said Toni Pray, coordinator. Throughout the week, students were invited to eat lunch in the library and watch ski movies, including downhill, cross country, mountain climbing and skiing in the Tetons, she explained. Drawings for prizes were held daily, with winners announced during seventh period. Prizes were donated by the Utah Travel Council and local ski resorts and included Utah calendars, ski and hats, posters, Ski Utah after ski meals, sports watch with timer and free passes to various ski resorts. Between 400 and 500 students came every day last week during the three lunch periods. The program generated a lot of enthusiasm for the school ski program and for skiing m general, Mrs. Pray observed. Thirty-siprizes were awarded, with the top winners being, on Monday, Aimee Sprouse and Bryan Hagen; Tuesday, Lynnette Aldrich and Shawn Martinez; Wednesday, Eric Halcom and Kevin Williams; Thursday, Jason Martin and Rhett Kasparian; Friday, Sheryl Grow, Barry Buss and Lynn Haas, winner in the mood to practice Christmas songs. Teachers involved in the project, along with Mrs. Pray, were Debbie Bassett, Alan Bailey and Susan Gudmundsen. First grade students at West Kearns elementary will present a Christmas program at 2 oclock today (Thursday) in the room. schools east There will also be a PTA meeting. About 240 children from the nine first grade classes will participate in the production which will feature narrative and songs. The children will spell the word Christmas, with a song to represent each letter, including Christmas Is for Kids and Hannukah. Students will play instruments including drums and bells. They are also making art work to be used in decorating the stage and walls. PTA president Joyce Blackburn will conduct a short meeting prior to the program.
