Show 2 Thursday, Dec. WEST VALLEY VIEW 15, 1983 Host Team Wins Title Again Spartans Top Pirates For Classic Crown Saturday Night MURRAY. Senior Kelly McFalls poured in 20 points to pace the Murray girls to a 6 victory over Cyprus in the championship game of 45-3- the Green Sheet Classic. It was Murrays fourth win in a row after an opening season loss at Provo and Murray Coach Becky Anderson said the early season success has been a little surprising. As a coach, Im very pleased with the way theyre playing together, she said. I knew we had a strong player (McFalls) coming back, but I wasnt sure how the others would play together. But everyone is doing their part. Their strong point is that they play well together as a team. In the early going of Saturdays title match, it was Cyprus which played well as a team, particularly on defense. The small, scrappy Pirates stifled the Murray offense with an effective full court press, forcing several turnovers which they parlayed into a advantage Cyprus Coach Jennifer Orison abandoned the press for much of the second half, during which the two teams played even, before bringing it back for a fourth quarter rally that brought the Pirates to within seven. In the last two minutes, however, Murray went almost exclusively in side to McFalls and won going away. McFalls, who was named the tournament MVP, hit several key free throws to ice the victory for the Spartans. Brenda Young added nine points in the contest, while Laurie Johnson pulled down 12 rebounds. Ann Brady led the Pirates with 14 points, while Bambi Peterson chipped in with 10. McFalls scored 13 points and Young added 12 in Murrays victory over Cottonwood in Thursdays opening round. Olympus high cagers rebounded from last weeks three-poin- t loss at Bingham with two big wins at home to run their record Anderson made some offensive adjustments in the second quarter, however, and the Pirates, who seemed ready to live or die with the press, died. Murray outscored Cyprus 18-- 3 in the period, at least 10 points of which came on layups while the Pirates were scrambling to get back on defense. to defeated a scrappy Taylorsville team Friday before whipping Hillcrests top ranked Huskies in a hoop version of the football game that never was. The Warriors were still close ) after three, but the Titans broke it open early in the fourth quarter on two consecutive three-poin- t plays by Andy Boyce. Taylorsville clawed its way back to within eight with less than five minutes remaining, but then missed three front ends of the one - and one and never really threatened. Boyce led the Titans in scoring with 17 points (5x14, 7x12), followed by Bill Ince and Chad Gardner with 12 apiece. Mickey Lambourne paced Taylorsvilles attack with 26 points (11x19, 4x8) and was the only Warrior to reach double figures. 13-1- 27-2- on the football field. Both teams are loaded with members of the football squads ranked one and two all season who were expected to meet in the state championship game last month. There was this thing among some of them (Oly gridders turned cagers) that this was the football game they never got to play, said Titan Coach Ron Huber. Once on the court however, it was all basketball and the Titans broke after an almost out to lead flawless first period. The Huskies got it down to eight midway through the second period, and were threatening to cut the margin to six, when reserve guard Mark Sperry stole a bounce pass and whipped a perfect bomb to Andy Boyce for a layup. Sperry came off the bench for Eric Morgan and he was playing so well, we just left him in, Huber said. Hillcrest superguard Marty Haws, who led all scorers in the first half with 13, was held to three second half points before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. Boyce finished the game with 26 points (11x19, 4x4) many of them while Haws was guarding him. Rich Eric-so- n scored 11 (5x8, 1x3) while Sperry had 10 (2x3, 6x6). The kids are really playing well as a team now, Huber said. 22-1- 0 (39-31- SOME WELCOME . . .
