Home economics classes have always had two models, the homemaking model or the Mrs. Newton explained. model, Traditionally, secondary school programs have been preparation for homemaking and classes have been labeled vocational or occupational, she explained. The Granger program teaches the model, then adapts the tools and principles to homemaking, she said. I have found students more easily transfer in that direction, adapting the things they learn as a step toward getting a job to use in their homes. If taught the other way around, they have a very hard time e lealizing they can get paid for remarked. My girls have done work for other students, repairing drill team uniforms, sewing for school shows and never expected any monetary reward, or even a ticket to the show. "I tell them, you are worthy of pay, she said. She works with her students to be sure they advance at their own level and speed, she said. Demonstrations are given several times each day of different projects, so that students at differing levels of proficiency always have a challenge and new work to do, she explained. Mrs. Newton was the outstanding vocational teacher of 1979 and is 1983 home economics teacher of the year for Utah. . A graduate of Cyprus high, she has an extensive background in vocational sewing, holds degrees from the University of Utah and has 60 related hours from BYU and Utah State. I try to find different projects each year for my students, she remarked. Students last year made quilts for Shriners hospital. They will be making lap robes for rest home residents this year, little league uniforms for youngsters needing assistance in getting them, and uniforms for the Razzle Dazzle drill team (Little Stars) for the third consecutive year, she said. Mrs. Newton has also designed a fanny pack for her students to make this year. A case in the school displays students work for sale, she noted. I like to keep students working, not wasting time because they run out of notions or materials, she remarked. To this end, if she finds a good sale on fabric, thread or other items, she stocks up. Students can purchase their needs from her supplies, and, if necessary, make weekly payments to her as long as they are paid up by the end of term. This keeps them from having to spend valuable time shopping around for needed items, she explained. It is a new and interesting concept to have the adults mixed in with the class of high school students, and we are finding it works very well, she commented. The students are training for the world of work, learning skills that will stand them in good stead in the job market, but can also be utilized in home sewing. Such skills are a very definite asset to anyone and a great help in finding good employment, she said. Anyone interested in the vocational power sewing class may register at the Granger high Community School office.
