Show Member Drive Eyed By VFW KEARNS. Members of the Kearns VFW and Auxiliary are conducting a membership drive in readiness for next year. A spokesman explained that the state VFW and auxiliary are holding a contest for posts trying to gain 100 percent membership before Aug. 1. Those interested in joining the group may contact Mr. or Mrs. Henry Details will be mailBeech, ed upon request. The post and auxiliary are also requesting that anyone having VFW hospital crutches or wheelchairs that are not in use return them, so that others now in need may use them, said Mrs. Beech. We have offered several pairs of crutches and wheelchairs for public use when needed, but have lost track of some of them. We need to have them returned so they may be made available for others in need. They are all marked for easy identification and any response would be most welcome, she said. The auxiliary will hold a potluck picnic next month to raise funds for its cancer aid and research program. Members will be notified in advance, she said. school Melvin Hall In DY COIWC 25 For Mission TAYLORSVILLE. Melvin and Louise Hall left last week for a three-yea- r mission assignment to Davao, The Philippines. Mr. Hall will serve as president of that mission and will be assisted by his wife in the calling. He was released earlier this month as president of Taylorsville stake after serving 8V2 years. The Halls, who have never been to the Philippines, had never heard of Davao when the assignment came to them. Their previous travels have taken them to England, Mexico and Canada. English is the main language in the mission, with Spanish as the second language. We probably will be learning explained Mrs. Hall. Tagalog, Thats the dialect spoken by many of the natives there. Though Mr. Hall did not have the opportunity to serve a fulltime mission as a young man, he did spend time in the South Pacific as a Marine during WWII. The Halls, who have spent 37 of their 40 years of marriage in Taylorsville, completed four days of intensive training and orientation at the Missionary Training Center at BYU last week. Mr. Hall took early retirement from his position in the controllers department at Kennecott when the mission call came. Mrs. Hall moved to Taylorsville as a child, the daughter of Darrell and Susan Huggard. Lynn Stromness, son of Arthur and Shirley Stromness, graduated this spring from the University of Utah. While at Kearns high he participated in school musicals, was a member of the seminary council and attended Boys State. His wife Julie is the daughter of Myron and Bernice White. Also a Kearns graduate, she was active in the schools pep club. The Utah Basque Club will host the 10th annual North American Basque Organization convention on July 24.
