Chuck-A-Ram- a, here's a point Webster describes them as people whose ideas or actions are eccentric, fantastic or insane. The subject is kooks Funk & Wagnall adds that theyre crazy or offbeat. Perhaps the term came from the kookaburra bird of Australia. It has an insane laugh rather than a bird call and conis also known in the land down sequently under as the laughing jackass. A small loving smile comes on the face of a ITLL BE OKAY mother as she comforts her baby, who didn't think one ride at the West Valley Fair was all that much fun. It had been an unseasonably low mercury reading that put a crimp in last years celebration, also on the final day Much lighter winds and small amounts of precipitation were experienced on each of the events first two days, both of which yielded crowds close to the expectations of the sponsoring organizations Expressing disappointment with what transpired Saturday afternoon were Virginia Wasescha of the West Valley Area Arts and Sciences Council and Dave Harvey of the West Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, sponsoring organizations Many observers expressed their appreciation for the fireworks display handled by the West Valley City Fire Department, with some inquiring about the possibility of a similar display for the Fourth of July In the three previous years, the Fair and Arts Festival has included July 4 as one of its dates N by Jim Cornwell youre never sure whether theyre harmless Worse, or are potentially dangerous. Although they laugh like a kookaburra, you cant be certain theyre downright nuts or just playful Take the other evening One of the gals on our staff walked out of r of so after the plant a quitting time and found herself e with one of the queerest of the laughing characters half-hou- face-to-fac- jackasses. This one dropped his Levi briefs maybe they were Wranglers - to reveal he was wearing no shorts. - -- Though were all exposed to a in the good deal of films, on cable TV or even at the swimming hole, our gal was surnear-nudit- y prised to say the least Still, she demonstrated a good i deal of composure. After stalling a minute or so by rummaging in her car for some imaginary object, she turned to the guy, still naked from hips to ankles, and said, Should I laugh now or later He hitched up his briefs and ambled away before she could get to a telephone to call the police. Which means hes free to do it again. To paraphrase an old expression, He who strips and runs away, lives to strip another day. Thats only one form of kookiness. A more frightening one is the kookaburra who attacks female runners Dont look across the state line as though that doesnt happen here m Zion - its been only a short while since that precise thing took place near Ft. Douglas Fortunately, that crime was -- solved swiftly and the gals long term injury will be more mental than physical Not so fortunate are female runners in other parts of the country, for a growing list of murders is being compiled as a result of these circumstances its a sex crime of the kooks seem to operate in that atmosphere. Usually Take the group of men (in biological terms only) who conon a ducted a public gang-rap- e pool table in the East a few months ago. Now that was a prime example of multiple kooks in operation These kooks even had help from the sidelines - a group of obviously offbeat onlookers who studied individual techniques with voyeur interest Eventually even more kooks got into the act - the jury that ac -- -- quitted the rapists heads that list soAw cmon, Cornwell, meone said that other day when we were discussing this senseless incident, that gal wanted to do what she did or they wouldnt have done it You bet! Every girl looks forward to the day when she can be sexually gratified by a series of studs operating on a pool table in front of a live audience1 Then there are the kooks who molest their own children - mostly family affairs involving father and daughter. Social workers say theres much more of that right here in the Land of Zion than wed ever imagine. What can you say about that There really type of are no words to adequately describe him sex-frea- Nor are there words to describe what such an inci dent does to the victim. Right on the heels of that kook are those who beat a child to death Amazing, isnt it, how the pattern is repeated? Boy friend mauls youngster to death, then pleads for leniency because he really didnt mean to do it Wheres Mom while all this is happening? Often shes trying to conceal what really took place by concocting some fairy tale about the fall that injured her child. She, too, qualifies for a kookaburra badge The question about kooks is whether theyre increasing or the percentage of our population guilty of kookiness is about the same - there are just more people today Lets hope its the percentages. Most of us are already up to our necks in kooks and really cant handle any more. -- |
