As a result of such changes, the phone company will be presenting the following proposals to the Public Service Commission to offset a large hike in flat rates. Residence customers, he said, may be offered three types of service to choose from: a budget service, for $4.50 a month with no calling allowance; a standard service, for $8.50 a month with a $5.50 calling allowance; or a flat rate service ranging from $14 to $25 with unlimited local calling. Businesses, he continued may be offered two options: a standard service of $15 a month with no calling allowance or a flat rate service of about $40 per month with unlimited local calling. All options, except for the flat rate, will be assessed fees for each Calls made call, Jiminez said. within six miles of the home switching center will be charged 2V2 cents for the first minute and cent for each additional minute, while calls made within 22 miles of the center will be charged 8 cents for the first minute and 3 cents for each additional minute. The new formula, Jiminez said, is based on each call being charged on distance and duration, with disk counts given for calling periods. If approved by the Public Service Commission, it will replace a flat rate service of about $12 for all residence customers which currently allows unlimited local calls. Jiminez pointed out that the old formula doesnt give credit for economic users.
