By virtue of the fact both teams were still alive, that both had placed in the top eight at the 3A state tournament, both were winners. But while that may be true, Coach Becky Andersons Spartans embellished their memories 1982-8season with a convincing 4 victory over the young Bulldogs. That boosted Murray to sixth place in a tournament dominated by Utah County schools. For Coach John Colosimos Bulldogs, the loss meant an eighth place finish - thats remarkable when viewed against what prospects looked like at the start of the year. The Spartans, on the other hand, had entered the school year with their sights set on challenging for the state title. But championship ambitions were curtailed suddenly when Kim Nidey, a premier shooter with a average as a sophomore, moved back to Grand Junction, Colo. That forced Anderson to revise her thinking completely. But the different emphasis also tributed to the rapid improvement of junior Kelly McFalls, who took over the scoring burden inside and made herself a force to be contended with. Still, neither Murray nor Judge could keep pace with the Utah County schools. Judge lost badly to Mountain View on opening day; Murray suffered the same fate a day later at the hands of Orem. After that, however, both looked good. The Bulldogs bounced back from their opening day loss to thump Carbon Earlier in the year, Carbon had beaten Judge in overtime. Colosimo recognized that other Region Six coaches were licking their chops, thinking that this would be the year theyd go up against Judge and come away with a couple of wins. Maybe easy wins. Early season results didnt do much to diminish those fears.
