Its something one would have to know, along with the spelling of all its synonyms, before launching into a review of Taylorsville highs presentation of Hello Dolly which concluded here Monday night. What more could a reviewer say than did capacity audiences with their enthusiastic response which was spontaneous rather than polite, prolonged instead of cursory? The perfect combination of student talent and faculty capability should help erase the long shadow that Cottonwood roots had cast over the schools drama program and should insure that there wont be many empty seats on opening nights in the future. If there was one overriding impression left by the show, it was total excellence. While there were many outstanding performances, none was forced to carry the show. The show was able to stand on its own merits, like a picture puzzle where none of the pieces have yet been lost. Director Russell Johnson must share the limelight with Robbin C. Jones choreographers and Stacy Jarret and with musical director Norman Wendel and orchestra director Robert Crump. If Earl Catmull is as wise as hes proven in the past, hell fight to keep this team together. And Johnson will continue to use the talents of Walt Schofield and Joyce Rawson to help develop sets. They were stupendous for this show and there were many. Schofield was also involved, along with Lance Hansen and Myrl W. Thurston, in some technical direction, while Newell Standley headed a capable stage crew. The show started strong and there was never a moments letdown. Scene changes flowed smoothly without a hitch. No one in the audience needed a watch on this night. The show was over before anyone had a remote chance to become bored. Obviously the star of Hello Dolly is Dolly, played this time by Camille Gerber. It was a flirtatious, confident Dolly with absolutely no hint of Barbra Streisand. Clearly the actress did not use the film to help her interpret her role. Her strongest moments came in the second act and the best one was when she sang So Long Dearie, but she also was close to perfect in the shows title number. Broad facial expression and a great deal of stage appeal marked her performance. Her costumes were absolutely stunning. Opposite her as the often irascible Horace Vandergelder, Randy Ewing was excellent. So natural was his approach, that one was not really aware he was acting. He was like a piano, always doing the right thing at the right time. He simply seemed to be Horace. He joined with the boys chorus in one of the numbers, It Takes A Woman. That scene also featured the pair who came close to stealing the show Shawn Orton as Cornelius Hackl and Dan Mattheson as Tucker. Every young girl in the audience professed to be in love with this pair and some of us old girls were quite taken. As Cornelius, the Orton boy near well-conceiv- well-tune- d show-stoppin- g - Bar-nab- y Prince Of Peace books and clean used clothing. Like Dolly, they Mrs. Nageli said senior citizens are soliciting donations for all three phases of the sale. Donated baked goods are to be brought to the center on the morning of the sale, with bazaar and used broad facial expression and stage appeal and were cast in perfect roles for doing so. The directors hand was evident in that nothing was overdone, however. Jodi Fellows gave a courageous performance as Irene Malloy, battling an illness that robbed her singing voice of its normal quality, she was nevertheless convincing in her role and played well opposite young Orton. The chorus and dancers were clearly an important part of the success the show enjoyed. Their enthusiasm was evident and without it, the show just doesnt work. The orchestra was excellent - and kind of like Horace in that it didnt scream for attention one was only really aware of it during the overture and entreacte. Probably if the audience could chose a favorite moment, it was the Waiters Gallop. But all of the numbers had something going for them. -- - BEER ( eat who would like to choreography was highlighted by how well the horse, played by Kelly Cahoon and Minda Homer, handled its moment in the spotlight. WEST Businesses and residents here with burglar alarms must obtain permits for those systems, but may do so free of charge until Jan. 1. The City Council recently passed an ordinance requiring that all burglar alarms be registered with the City Police Department. The ordinance was intended to help police crack down on the number of false alarms. An installation permit is required. In- formation obtained from the permit will let police know what kind of alarm system they are dealing with if an alarm - false or not - goes off, said Chief David Campbell. The $15 installation permit fee will be -- -- m waived if the form is returned to the Police Department before Jan. 1, Campbell said. Assistant Police Chief Gerald Maughan said Tuesday that letters have been sent to about 300 businesses and residents whose alarms had gone off during the past year. Others whose systems were not gered during been notified, he added. however, Campbell also noted that the ordinance stipulates penalties for excessive numbers of false alarms. Penalties go into effect if a home or business has more than four false alarms in 30 days, seven in 90 days, nine in 180 days and 13 in a year. Maloney said the use of alcohol has a tremendous impact on communities and said alternate sources of revenue, such as the beer tax, are needed to offset these He estimated that in impacts. West Valley City alone last year, enforcement of drunken driving laws cost taxpayers $300,000. He said that sum would require about 1.75 mills in taxes to fund. The cost, he said, is created by people who desire to use the substance and should not be passed onto people with fixed incomes. Murray Mayor LaRell D. Muir commented at midweek that he concurred with COG on the concept for the beer tax, although he said he was undecided about how much additional tax should be levied. I think weve got a problem ofwith alcohol and fenses that were really not coping we need to do something with about it, he said. He said a wholesale tax would be the best, because real problems could develop just computing a retail tax. Muir said the proposal will be considered by the Murray City Council this month, perhaps as early as next Tuesday. South Salt Lake Mayor Jim Davis concurred with Maloney saying, unless our law enforcement agencies have the tools to enforce laws, well never see that education program (proposed by theSDAD) work.
