Show 2 WEST VALLEY VIEW Thursday, Nov. 11, 1982 Late Rally Also Falters Against Huskies - Granite Blows Early Chances In SALT LAKE. Theres something about a quarterfinal game that doesnt agree with Granite. Last year, Coach Wayne Star-tin- s Farmers lost in the quarterfinals to a good Roy team, one which they had beaten earlier. This time around, Granite fell to a Hillcrest club which it could -should - have blown out of the stadium in the first half. Instead, the Farmers had to settle for a lead, an advantage that quickly evaporated midway through the second half when the Huskies scored three times in a span. And just when it appeared the Farmers might pull off a victory with a late surge, they came up short, and thus bowed out of the 4A tournament Thursday an loser to the Huskies. -- 6-- 0 half-tim- e four-minu- te 18-1- 3 Crucial mistakes were the key. Once before this fall, in the season opener, mistakes had made the difference in a Hillcrest-Granit- e game - a half dozen turnovers helped the Huskies edge the in overtime. Farmers Thursdays turnovers hurt far worse. Far more was at stake. Three times the Farmers could have scored in the early going; three times they didnt. Granite ground Hillcrest into the artificial turf, yet couldnt put points on the board to show for it. Two fumbles inside the Husky 15 and a missed chip shot field goal served as a life support system for the Huskies, keeping them in the struggle despite weak vital signs for22 quarters. Once revived, Hillcrest put on a vigorously robust performance for -- 28-2- 7 like one before, was foiled (a third extra point try, a kick, was blocked by Da ve Abel ) . It was Three quick scores like that could easily put a team down, down so far it couldnt come back. Granite came back, however, scored once and had time to score again. But it couldnt. The one scoring drive was the lone Farmer success in the second half. Its first three possessions had consisted of nine plays. Result: two yards and a Hillcrest touchdown on the interception. Granite finally got untracked on the first play after the interception. Quarterback Chad Pehrson hit Kirk Goddard on a pass, moving the Farmers into Husky territory at the 48. Watson, who had a splendid day to cap a season in which he became the other on the big play. The Huskies had knotted the score at when Eric Varoz capdrive with a ped a quarterback sneak from the two. After a Granite punt, Hillcrest scored less than two minutes later on an pass from Varoz to Marty Haws. The big play that drive was Bill catch Robertsons diving, of a pass tipped by Granite defensive back John Culverwell. But the third was a giveaway. A sideline pass intended for Rex Watson that never reached its destination. Husky linebacker Robert Hill cut in front of Watson at the 38 and raced down the sidelines. He cut Granite between two would-btacklers at the 10 and carried the ball into the end zone for the TD. A conversion attempt, four minutes, just long enough to send Granite packing. The game developed in three phases. The first encompassed the first half and one Hillcrest possession in the third quarter, and was characterized by Granites missed 18-- 6-- 6 opportunities and the Huskies inability to move the ball. The second phase was the Husky resurgence; the third, Granites attempted comeback in a game it had all but dominated. The Husky resurgence struck quickly and deeply into the one minute, down Farmers. Up just a couple later. If anything could snap a teams spirit, it was a spree like that. 36-ya- 6-- 0 18-- 6 three-touchdow- Gridiron Loss To Hillcrest 18-1- 3 n Particularly the third. After Pehrson lost a yard on a fumbled snap, Watson swept right, cut inside another block by Hola, eluded a pair of linebackers and skipped away for a touchdown run. Pehrsons conversion made it with 7:30 left.
