Show Doug And Karen Fisher - 3B WEST VALLEY VIEW Thursday, Sept. 9, 1982 West Valleyites Touch Base With Berlin Wall by Margaret Slack Nothing could be better than to share two weeks of your life with someone of another country. So say Karen and Doug Fisher, recently returned from a trip to Berlin. The couple made their trip with the Salt Lake and Cheyenne Ambassadors, a friendship group, and found it a truly memorable experience. Their memories of the friendships formed, and experiences shared, in West Berlin are related e with their side-by-sid- observations formed during a visit to East Berlin, and the marked contrast they saw in that area, where a visible line is drawn between freedom and Our West Berlin hosts, and everyone we met, treated us royally. Our hosts were Yoachim Niclasen and Brigitte Niesigh, and we shall never forget them, tells Karen. We were strangers, but were treated like family, say the Fishers. They shared their lives with us. For two weeks we walked, rode malermeister. They ate dinner one night in an old fortress dating back about 750 years, with the staff and singers in old German e costume, and German food. Then came the visit to East Berlin. It is unbelievable to see the conditions those people live under, they observed. Everything belongs to the government; the double-decke- r buses, subways and the overground trains. We found German transportation is wonderful and so efficient. Berlin is 27 miles long by 21 miles wide and we saw every mile of it, said Doug. We saw beautiful lakes, old-styl- thick forests, rivers, skyscrapers and thousands of apartments. We saw the a large church that had been bombed during W.W. II. Scars from that war are still visible after 38 years, he recalls. But the best part was the people, they agree. They were so kind and helpful. And the food they gave us! We ate wienerschnitzel, sauer-krautbrotwurst and homes, farms. sion. After spending four hours at the Berlin wall to get into East Germany, we realized that it is at that point your e, the most luscious breads. But theres a catch! There is no water in Berlin, you have to drink mineral water! The Fishers enjoyed the open air markets, bake shops, butcher shops, and loved the sidewalk cafes. Their host is a CPA and showed them his workplace, and even arranged for Doug, a painter, to visit with his German counterpart, a the Everything. They are told what to do and when to do it. They cannot even leave their villages without special permis- freedom is taken away. Guards and dogs were everywhere, say the Fishers. Guards searched every vehicle, sometimes making every passenger get out. No one was allowed to take pictures. Anyone trying to do so found their film immediately confiscated. Not every German visitor comes back with a bit of The Berlin Wall, but Doug Fisher did and now that barbed wire hangs, framed, upon his wall. While traveling through East Germany they were not allowed to stop, or to talk w'ith any- - one. There were guard towers all along the roads. The villages seemed old and run down. There is a church in every village, but the people are forbidden to goto church. Most do not have cars and what few cars there are, are all the same, even to the color. You can order a car, pre-pafor it, and then wait four to ten years to get it, they were told. The cars are cheaply made of fiberglass and paper. There were very few markets, and no advertising. At night traveling was scary, for there are few lights and military police are everywhere. The Wall is ugly, and stands for ugliness, remark the Fishers. People living within a certain distance have been given special permits to do so, but are forbidden to have visitors. Some can look across to homes or apartments of their loved ones, but cannot visit. Some are forgotten because of the difficulty of getting permission to visit. Through it we find there are great people all over the world and learn to love and appreciate them, said Karen and Doug The 172 hours flight time coming home was spent exchanging memories with their fellow travellers and betting on who had had the best hosts, they laughed, and everyone ended feeling they had been the favored ones German money and must spend it all in East Berlin, and can't bring Try Green Sheet sified ads! clas- 262-668- 2 Dr. Douglas K.
