Show 10B SAYS SHE Thars gold That phrase, in Thursday, Sept. . 2, 1982 .. by Michele B'artmess them thar hills. yellow metal. This summer we joined them for a couple of days in the mountains of northern Idaho. Actually, we thought we were in Montana and were joyously pulling Montana agates out of the stream, when informed that the dirt road had somehow strayed back across the border. when uttered in 1849, set off a western migration that certainly had a great deal to do with the fact that today California is one of the population centers VIEW e WEST VALLEY Where we were wasnt the only myth we dealt with. of You wont get very wet, just your feet, my mother told us before we set out. Well, a day later I was wet up to my armpits, kneeling in a stream which I was making deeper by the minute, operating'the dredge according to my fathers instructions. They say this is nugget counmy parents reported. try, Theyre supposed to be big enough to choke a cow. The cattle of America are safe, I told myself after we panned out the results of six hours worth of stream- - America. But there was also gold in the hills of other states. Still is, in fact. I migrated north myself this summer and actually found some with these same two hands that spend 11 plus months of every year operating a camera and a keyboard. The fact that Im back here operating the keyboard indicates how much we found. Since retirement, my parents have spent a portion of every summer prospecting for that bright deepening efforts and placed it in a small vial, where the powder like substance sort of covered the bottom. Later that evening, however, the owner of the claim wandered down to our campsite and showed us some nuggets he had pulled out of the same stream several months ago. If a cow would choke on something the size of a pennyweight, then therell be beef in the freezer this winter. They were gorgeous. It wouldnt take many to make a troy ounce. But then I realized, for some, the challenge was in finding it. They had no need for the money. Just let me get my hands on some, I prayed. searToday, he continued, ching for gold like this is a form of recreation. I think hes right. The gold is there because at the former $35 per ounce, it was simply not worth getting out of those stream beds. interesting concepts about ing for gold. He called attention to pann- at least one murder that occurred in the early days associated with that claim. And he talked about the fact that there really are some lost mines throughout the hills of Montana and Idaho. I never understood how anyone could walk away from all those stream. Today, with the price more than 10 times that, its worth it. But there probably arent too many mother lodes left. He also shared with us some mother might be the worlds best cook. While we were in the stream, she was in the motorhome baking bread. And later cooking a wonderful meal. I Secondly, one of the reasons hate camping is that I dont like to be dirty. It was hard to be dirty in that much water. The water bed was here, so sleeping atop a mattress in a tent didnt kill me. It was just minor torture. And finally, theres nothing that beats being with ones friends and family. There is something to be said for being in the mountains where the telephone isnt and knowing the traffic is still traversing Seventh East, but you cant hear it. Shocking though it sounds, I almost wish wed gone up a day or two sooner. Id like to have kept trying for one of those Id probably never even have cashed it in, but just imagine what a conversation piece it would have made. The gold is generally found in the bedrock. That means you move a lot of boulders, which is what Janet, Craig and I spent that day doing. But when Dad actually panned out some gold, we found added energy in a hurry. The dredge is like a giant vacuum cleaner. Our host estimated that you find about an ounce of gold in 100 cubic yards of gravel on that claim. He said particular we probably moved about a yard and a half the day we spent in the riches," he commented. It was sort of hard work, but kind of fun. A definite change for us. Anybody who knows me well, knows I dont do camping. I hate being dirty and when I have a nice water bed at home, I cant see any sense in sleeping on the ground. People like my parents, who can invest in some equipment, have the time (thats the catch) and who enjoy being out in the wilds can benefit by their search. They probably arent going to strike it rich, at least not in the monetary sense. But the recreation is well worth the effort. And I guess a big strike is always a possibility. This trip had a few things going for it though - in addition to that tiny amount of gold we discovered. First there was the food. cow-choker- s.
