By no stretch of the imagination could Cottonwood fans have anticipated that the American Legion regionals would unfold as they did. With help from some playing conditions, the Utah State champs committed 15 errors in two games enroute to elimination from the tournament here Thursday. It was almost a direct turnabout for Coach Bob Burketts club, which had played possibly its best ball of the season in sweeping to the state crown a week before. If its any consolation for Cottonwood, the regionals are considered frosting on the cake for the Utah champs. Winning at the regionals is not expected. Doing well is a bonus to the gratification of capturing the state crown. Three of the four coaches in this weeks collegiate grid openers involving Utah schools are rookies at their jobs. Only LaVell Edwards, the fabulously successful mentor of Brigham Youngs Cougars, isnt facing the jittery reality of a first game at a new school. Edwards team meets NevadaLas Vegas this evening (Thursday) at 5:30 p.m. The unusual day and time are the result of a national cable television pickup. The Cougars and Rebels are, in actuality, launching the new nations college grid season. UNLVs coach, Harvey Hyde, whos moved into upper ranks after show. But ffensive Vegas, a succeeding at Pasadena City College, will be guiding his first Vegas team. Two newcomers are involved in the other weekend tussle. Both Chuck Stobart of Utah and Doug Graber of Montana State were in other assignments last year. Stobart piloted his University of Toledo squad to a 3 record in 1981 and captured the first California Bowl crown by surprising Pacific Coast Athletic Conference champ San Jose State. Graber was a staff assistant in the Big Ten and has assumed his first headcoaching duties. The Utes and Bobcats collide at 7:30 p.m. in 9-- victor in t at Provo, isnt expected to be a soft touch. Its the third meeting of the two schools with the Cougars on top, on the strength of wins in 1978 and 1980. The awesome record compiled in 10 years at the BYU helm by Edward is one of the big factors in todays game. His mark for the decade is 86 wins, 32 losses and a tie. In the past six campaigns hes been even more impressive with 62 victories in 75 starts and six consecutive WAC championships.
