And I'm dance not going into a song-anabout "The King and I" where hese words originated, but . . . ust the same it is a puzzlement. I I To go farther. Far Eastern people say that women always begin walking with their left foot first and males start with the right. I dunno about that one. I've been watching a lot of people lately and it seems to me that here in the western world, we step out first with any foot that is handiest to where we're going. Ho, ho, hoi now, that's a story, is it not? And there's the puzzlement. For it just won't work. Oh, I suppose you can do it with much thought and effort, but it doesn't feel 'right.' It's awkward. Your arms get tangled up and it's a mess. And we all have our own oddities. I'm right handed, see, but deal a deck of cards, set the silverware on the table and hand out papers (or such) with my left hand. I've tried to deal cards and distribute sheets of papers with my right hand and it just doesn't work. Its not only awkward, it's impossible. After you untangled your arms, and have given up on that puzzlement, follow along with me and fold your hands. Yeah, the same way you did as a school child when the teacher told you to put your hands on the desk and fold them. Done it a million times, haven't you? I One thumb fits comfort- ed. Soon after that, in June of 1978, 'Tis said that men always dress by always putting the same leg into their trousers first, but I can't say 'cause I've never seen that many men donning or doffing their trousers to be an expert. But, as for myself, I I find always begin washing my face, brushing my teeth and combing my hair on the same side every time. I hold my cup of tea or drink in the same hand, too, and the other seems somehow 'wrong.' able 'on top' with the other one tucked 'neath it. Of course. But . . . (you know what I'm going to day) now unfold them, and fold them again with the 'other' thumb on top. Egad, egad, egad. All thumbs, aren't you? I've asked everyone I know (and some I don't know) to do these two simple exercises and to a man they've all looked at me with surprise when asked to do them the 'other' way. Acquaintances are beginning to avoid me and those who know me well have not been above telling me to quit coming up with such foolishness. To quit because it drives them crazy and they can't figure out why. Certain friends greet me Now, none of this trivia is earth shaking or even important, but once you start observing this type of thing it's hard to stop. Just try folding your arms 'the other way' and you'll see what mean. I "It truly To Be is a puzzlement." Spencer, Doctor of Education Administration, is living proof that a program she is heading for Granite School District really works. The classes that the District is offering deal with weight control and behavior modification, with the objective of teaching people how to control their weight with proper nutrition and good eating habits. Sidnee, a home economist with a B.S. degree, had no weight problem for many years. However, with the birth of her seventh child, which had been delivered by her vital systems stopped working, and she found herself suddenly full of tubes. She suffered partial paralysis for several days. Luckily, she soon returned home, a healthy woman, but also soon found that she had developed a compulsion to eat. Her mental attitude had changed and she had picked up bad eating habits. She found herself eating while standing up, eating while doing household chores and even eating while driving the car. Eventually, it took its toll, and she gained twenty pounds that she neither wanted nor need- right-hande- different on Sessions will be held Tuesday afternoons and evenings through Dec. 1st. Topics will include time management and goal setting, budgeting, body needs. Mrs. Spencer states, We first must admit we have a problem and tell ourselves that Now is the time! We must make a plan for today, not tomorrow. According to the outline of the program, people tend to reward themselves with food. Good behavior is rewarded with food as is also bad behavior. Food solves problems and the greatest pleasure some have in life is eating good food. These concepts are all discussed in the program. The program teaches participants to deal with stress without food. When a compulsion to eat arises, participants are encouraged to take a long walk, read, talk on the phone, do handiwork, or travel to the nearest store and buy something for themselves. All of our programs are geared for good sensible weight loss, comments Mrs. Spencer. It is wise to avoid fad diets as our bodies do not function at their fullest when we use diets such as this. A good sensible weight loss is IV2 pounds of fat per week. This can usually be done on about 1,000 calories a day. Good eating habits listed by the program include: eat a variety of 1 exercise, THE OPENING OF HIS OFFICE FOR THE PRACTICE OF PODIATRIC MEDICINE AND FOOT SURGERY AT 3 jONEWEEK ONLYlj Woke tjoun Bon Ateo Spankfo! It was addressed by Karen Stone, state specialist in consumer homemaking, who introduced a new curriculum for high school students who were overweight. On the personal basis, Karen told that in one year she herself had lost over fifty pounds and, everyone she looked there noted that marvelous. Sidnee then attended the classes which grew from the USU convention. They were held in the Granite Community School Program and with that program, she lost pounds. She also learned to limit her food portions and to change her diet and eating habits. In the behavior modification program, the habits developed include the fact that quantity matters, eat at a table or an appropriate place, not at a desk, not at the television. The program teaches that we all have only one body and that we cannot go out and purchase another one. We cant be too busy to feed it but we must learn to feed it right. Fuel for the body is food, however, we should limit the intake of fuel to match what our Those who will head Weight Control classes to be sponsored by the Granite Community Education met for Planning Classes.
