Show Out Our Window . . Thursday, May 21, WEST VALLEY VIEW 2B 1981 . tW BtwIW remember them with joy and a few vagrant tears. And the fact that I go to no cemetery has nothing to do with my love for them. Of course I love them . . . and notice, please, that I don't say loved. There is no past tense to love. I love them, that's all. During the year I sometimes take a blossom to a grave, and sometimes I don't. A spray of lilacs to Brad's. A rose to Gram, and a gay posey to Mom and Dad. But when, and if I do, it's because I know they loved that flower and that it pleases me to do so. They were the people who once made up my world. Among them were the onces who gave me life me once was born . . . nurtured me grow up. One be. . . helped came the father of my children . . Gram comforted me in my sorrows gave comfort to her and when her need arose . . stood at her side and 'helped' when it was her turn to die. Pardon me, but Memorial Day, . to me . . . has come to mean 'going to the cemetery' because everyone else does, and too many think, "Oh, my, what would others think if we don't." Well, as you may have gathered, from my many words, Ethel doesn't really care what others think. Memorial Day will be here this t weekend and thousands and thou- sands will go to ceme teries to put flowers upon graves of those who J once lived and now are 'some- place else.' I shan't be among those that yearly J who make I grimmage, although I have stood by many a gravesite as someone I love ivas being returned again to Ithe earth. It was the day when , after the Civil War, the Southern soldiers reverently and sadly walked to the 'graveyards' to place cut flowers upon the graves of their comrades who had died fighting for 'their' side. It was only later that the northern soldiers picked up the ceremony. No mother, wife, sister or brother walked in those early 'parades.' It was only for soldiers. But over the years, other relatives filtered in, one by one, and today, of course, we have almost forgotten that the day was once for fallen soldiers. Today everyone who wishes goes to the cemeteries. But my words today harken back to the days when our fallen heroes only were honored and Robert Louis Stevenson, marked our actions words. with these d heart-rendin- i more alive today than they ever J were While confined to the limi- tations of what their physical body J could . . . and could not . . . do. 9h Requiem Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose, but . . . young men think it is. And we were young. And so, when I hear people complaining of the negotiations that go on around the world over differences between nations, how the United Nations debate and debate over issues, I think back to Stevenson's words and realize it is far better for old men to debate their differences than for young men to die. And so, however you spend the 'Decoration Day' Weekend . . . make it a good time. Ethel g ... I . . it's Memorial . I know what I think, and that's the rule for my behavior. What we get afterwards to me . . . will be the 'result' of what we did here. Not a 'punishment' for what we did, or a 'reward' for what we did . . but simply the 'result' of what we did here. Day. 40th Year Reunion For Jordon High Class Of 194 I . And yet, I do not mourn them, for I believe what I read in the Bible and it tells me that those who die to this world, are, at the same time, being born to another. And that, for some reason, it was the right time for that change. And though sorroved at their I passing, think no sad thoughts or sing no sad songs for them (or for me) anymore. They lived, as live. They loved, as love. And, if my idea of what the Good Book J says is even they're ... . It's like a roll call out of my past, and as I write, the key word jumps at me. The past. Yes, they are' my past and the past is irrevocably gone. Whether it was just an hour ago, a year ago, or a thousand years eigo, what is past, is past. J Vecwilwi Dot) I as I experience things I know Gram would love to know; and fondly as I recall how much they helped form what Ethel is today. And that, to me, is 'giving them flowers.' Now, for heaven's sake, don't stop going to the cemetery if that chore brings you joy, but as you go, remember . . . you're doing it all for yourself, because . . . they're not there.
