For anyone not with the pinball ciracquainted cuit, Space Zap is just one of those electronic video games revolutionizing the amusement t 21,1981 v by Mike Gorrell business. Machines often are subjected to verbal abuse. Even the mildest of people get ticked off at lawn mowers, washing machines, TVs and (especially) cars when they dont work the way theyre supposed to. The game was over. Rather than just letting it go at that, though, this machine let me know it had won. Bright lights of a nuclear explosion flashed all over the screen, accompanied by repeated explosions that lasted at least five extra-terrestri- They werent soft seconds. explosions either. They were loud. Real loud in the fairly crowded but still quiet pizza parlor where I happened to be playing the table game. The machine was letting not only me but also everyone else around know that it had whipped me. It did so effectively. A middle-age- d couple two tables away looked over just after the explosions started. A few more heads turned. I was in the spotlight. The same kind of spotlight youre in when you do something dumb, like tripping on the steps and almost falling down in front of a whole crowd of people. What can you do? You can play it cool and pretend you dont hear anything and that the machine isnt making a - sound. That works sometimes. Or you can try to slip away gracefully so that no one knows it was you that set off such a clamor. That works - infrequently. Or you can pop another quarter in the machine and try again. That works never. You lost again. And start off another series of explosions. -- - Space isnt the Zap game that humans. makes fun only of In another game, you try to defend five or six cities from nuclear attack by these things that come from space. You have three MX missile silos to defend your cities from these things, which just keep coming, one wave after another. The first round they come slow. Its easy to blow them away with your own nuclear warheads. But everytime you win, the invaders come back with more things that move even faster than their pre- demise in Space Invaders, but its not so loud as to turn heads in a out pizza parlor. Nor do you stand as such an obvious victim of the machine when your last ship is obliterated by a meteorite or an alien spacecraft in Asteroids, decessors. Pretty soon, theres virtually no way you can protect yourself. Your cities are goners and you end up firing huclear missiles around at random. You always lose. (Sounds like the real MX game). When your last city and your last base are nuked, the whole screen lights up in flashes of red and white. Explosions ring out. Youre wiped out. (Sounds like the consequences of the MX game, too). And the machine lets reportedly the most popular game in the world. Those losses I can take without much trouble. Before you drop the quarter in , you know youre gonna lose. But when a machine adds insult to injury, that gets to be a bit too much. Just to show Space Zap that it hasnt got the better of me, Im gonna take that machine on you know it. again.
