Last year we honored Mavis Steadman, a lady who has given much to the young people in this I i valley, much more than classroom instruction. The man we honored last night is out of the same mold. We honored Hal as a performing artist because of his work with a band. Perhaps it was the perfect year. Kearns high presented The Music Man this year. And Hal was a music man, a performer, a showman. Tours were not an excuse to travel. They were an opportunity to perform. If there were students who needed that influence in their lives, but lacked ability to play an instrument, Hal found a place for them. It was not considered. The teaching profession lost when Hal elected to look toward the more lucrative area of private business. That should be a lesson to us, for there are many more out there who give up that profession, feeling they arent treated like professionals. That Hals service to education spanned two decades is a boon to the many who came under his influence. Yes, Hal was worthy of the Limelight When the band went to Europe, the uniforms failed to accompany try out to become a member of the group, it. But the band didnt scratch its performances.
