Show Older singles find dating a tough game By LUCILLE S. deview Orange County Register The dating game for the older woman Often is a shocking experi ence. Life has changed in the years since she was young. Expectations “out there” have changed. Hers have not. What's a woman to do? Eleanor sumsup the problem. For 16 years, she worked and raised three children alone — dear children, she says, well educated, Thursday, May 9, 1996 THE DAILY HERALD,Provo, Utah — Page BS Dog owners dig into recipe for gourmet dog biscuits By DEE snd TOM HARDIE Unversal Press Syndicate We've been so swamped with requests for our Gourmet Dog Biscuit recipe — as enjoyed by sophisticated dogs from London's West End — that we are consider- ing compiling a special cookbook of successful homemade recipes forall pets: * Julia M. Ahern, Newport News, Va., for example, excitedly told us she’s sure she'll make Points with two of her grandsons, and their three dogs. + Jean Fields, Ventnor City, N.J., thanked us, and added, “My dog Scotty thanks you wo!” * Patricia Field, Baltimore, a retired CIAofficer, said that more than half the households in our country today have a pet, usually a dog or cat. She shares her glam orous, midto apartment with Fanny, 9, a stand Pattold us, “If own money on food, I’msure their favorite would be chicken bits in ice cream, topped off with a rich sauce of ed cheese.” We promptly made it, and our grand children’s dog, also called Fanny, a would-be border collie, gobbled it Up. She also “time-shares” an out deor cat, Bob. When the co-own ers visit South Carolina, afraid he would be eaten byalligators, they leave him with Pat for safekeep ing. Dear Dee and Tom: Ou daughter, a single parent, recently honored us by returning home with her magnificent 2-year-old sonIsa iah. This has already changed our lives. Judy, my dear wife of 33 years reflected: “Sometimes ! doesn’t only give us what we it but what we need.” — Sanibel, Fla Grand remark of the week: Nhe son, Lucas, 8, and his brother, Jeff, 5, were in day care, a boy named Jason came in 1 outside, very upset. This upset Lucas, who said, “I don't know what difference it nakes what color skin you have. My brother has dark skin, and I don't care. I'm just glad he has Patty Bagley, Everett, hard working. She has a good job, lives modestly with her two cats in a cozy apartment She does volunteer work, always did; takes a weekly dance class at the local junior college: has no bad habits; loveslife. So whatbothers her? “Since my children have grown and gone, I date quite a lot,” she writes. “But I do not have a rela- tionship. A relationship? I don't rememberif I know how to have a relationship! “That's probablya silly thing for 4 woman myage to admit. But are all men looking for relationships? Isn’t there anyoneout there whowantsa friendshipfirst?” On a first date, she reports, the maninvariably asks Eleanor to go to Palm Springs or someother getaway for the weekend “What happened to getting to know each other first? she laments. “A movie, dinner, the theater? How about meeting each other's children? Did fall asleep somewhere alongthe line? Has the bell rung?” She thinks she has beenfaithful to family and now it’s her turn to live a little, but where should she tum? I enjoy people,” her letter continues. “I even hope to meet a man to share the rest of my life with; a life of mutual respect: someone to travel with and enjoy OAK (rp FURNITURE FOR LESS CORTUECPeeseR ay WENRG EAT LCL oreane! “SEAT SETS the grandchildren | hope to have. “Lamstill very muchinterested in sex but don’t want just a sexual relationship. Are there other womenlike me?” | asked around. Eleanoris not alone. Some older women say men are spoiled; the minute they are single, women rush in with food, sympathy and availability. \ few men, who grew up believing a woman can’t live without a man, say sex is what women expect, isn’t it? And the sooner, the better. Several women said they have given up looking. It doesn’t help that in the later years, the ratio is three women for every man. But a pair of older newlyweds said all this is unfair. Being thrown back into the dating scene isn’t any easier for men than for women; it just takes time and perseverance to find the right companion.
