How can I protect my ankles from sports injuries? A. Despite wearing well- designed footwear, you still can sprain an ankle. Studies by independent research groups and the NCAA have shown that ankle injuries account for 11 to 33 percent of injuries during sportsactivities. Tennis had the lowest documented occurrence, while basketball and volleyball reported some of the highest rates of ankle injuries. Sprains can be caused byabrupt changes in direction, uneven terrain, attemptsto avoid obstacles or even just casually maneuvering around a bench. There are several precautions to help reduce the chances of ankle injuries. Always warm up before attempting quick and abrupt move- ments. Often people think only the big muscle groups — quadriceps, hamstrings, low back, etc. -— need warming up. But smaller muscle groups — suchas the lower leg — must also be prepared. Try repeatedly tapping your foot on the floor with toes forward, alternately turned in and turned out to warm up the anteriortibialis. Write the alphabet in big cursive strokes with each foot to use all the musclesin the lower leg and increase blood flow. A basic calf stretch is achieved bystepping one foot atleast 3 fect behind you and pressing your heel downward. Lateral-motion training on a slide board helps prepare the ankles for more intense motion. Using less than competitive speed, simulate the movements you will use to prepare the neuromuscular interactionsthat will produce sudden changesin direction.
