Utah Flood Loss Hits $3.7 Million LOGAN, Utah (UPI) — Emergency services officials in Cache and Box Elder counties say heavy floods in the area have caused atleast $3.7 million in damageto roads, farms and homes. Ned Gines, emergency services director for Cache County, said Thursdayat least $2.5 million in damage has been sustained in his district. He said noestimate was availableas to the t of roads which were washed out by high waters, but said “there are a whole bunch."” Gines said health advisories concerning drinkin water had been lifted in Clarkson, Mendon Newton, but 700 residents in Trenton were still being told to boil their drinking water to avoid contamination problems. Box Elder County authorities estimated damage in the northern a of their region at $1.2 million. Five bridges which span the Malad River near Tremonton were still under water Thursday. Hundreds of residents in the flood-stricken area spent Thursday piling sandbags around homes and property and construction crews worked to clear debris from roads and public areas. Many ranchers reported that flooding had drowned livestock and tuined hay and alfalfa stocks. Gov. Scott Matheson Wednesday declared the region a state disaster area. Utah officials said damage estimates in the two counties were not yet completed, but said, if the comage is extensive enough, Matheson may ask President Carter for federal disaster relief. Gines said about 200 homes in Cache County sustained significant damage when heavy rains started to pour down in the area last weekend. Rains have continued intermittently all week. About 125 residences in Box Elder County were damaged by the high water, said county Emei ices Director Will Cross. Utah State Soil Conservation Commission Executive Director James Harvey said erosion resulting from the floods could cause serious problems for farmers in the coming season. Slay Trial Faces Ervil Lebaron SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) — Polygamist firebrand Ervil Lebaron has been bound over for trial on charges he ordered members of his Church of the Lamb of God to murdera rival polygamist leader. Fifth Circuit Court Judge Larry Keller Thursday ordered Lebaron,53, to appear for arraignment on murder, conspiracy and attempted murder charges on Feb. 1. action came after a three-day preliminary hearing which Keller closed to the news media and spectators.
