Sport Parade: NFL Should Use Replays By MILTON RICHMAN UPISports Editor =~ PITTSBURGH (UPI) — If one picture is worth a thousand words. then it’s high time such an avowedly open-minded bodyas the NFL wakesup and uses it to help clear up the kind of controversystill shrouding Donald Orr’s million-dollar call. Nobodywill ever know for sure how many millions of dollars changed handsall over the country Sunday whenthe Pittsburgh Steelers stomped on the Houston Oilers, 27-13, for the AFCtitle leading to the Super Bowl. By the same token, nobody can possibly say how manyof those millions would’ve gone the other way had Rocky Bleier’s touchdown late in the fourth quarter not enabled Pittsburgh to coverthe 9¥point spread that those who liked the Steelers hadto give for the privilege of betting on them. The NFL doesn’t conductits operations for the benefit of bettors and bookmakers, of course It caters strictly to the fans, or atleastit claims it does. That being the case. I think the NFL owes the fans more than the tissue-thin explanation it gave them on Orr’s no-touchdown call that went against the Oilers near the end of the third quarter in Sunday’s contest. WhatI’m talking abouthere is the ready access the officials who worked the game had to the instant replay cameras. If you have it, why not use it? The Wildcat’s had two scary homecourt games last week. Boise State camein with six road losses, but let the air out of the ball, patiently waiting for each basket and had Weber on the ropes, 43-34 with eight minutes to go in the game. But Weber took acvantage of five straight turnovers to tie the game at 54-54. The NFL'sposition, as explained more than once by Commissioner Pete Rozelle,is that the cameras aren't always conclusive and the sameplay can look different when photographed from various angles. Granted thatit is the case, it still doesn’t obviate the fact camerasfrequently can catchlittle things the naked eye cannot. Renfro still managed to twist loose and grabthe ball in the air, coming down only a foot ortwoinside the end zone before his own momentum caused him tofall outsideit. For a moment or so. nobody in Three Rivers Stadium knew whether the Oilers had scored a touchdown and narrowed their deficit to 17-16 or whether it was an incomplete pass because Renfro had been ruled out of bounds. After the officials conferred for some time, the play was called an incompleted pass. The Oilers kicked butit didn’t do them any good. Meanwhile, the instant replay camera showed clearly enough Renfro took two stepsin the end zone with theball before he went over theline. Orrsaid later he saw Renfro’s two feet come down into the end zonebut thatthe catch was made after he came downandthat Renfro didn’t have the proper possessionof the ball. That wasn’t the wayI sawit, but I have to admit thatin additionto seeingthe play out in front of me, I also had the advantage of watching it several times on TV's instant replay.
