Show BYU Sports Roundup Wednesday. January 9. 1980. THE HERALD. Provo. Utah—Page 7 Cougar Women Gymnaststo Entertain Boise State Thursday Cougar coach Rod Hill hopes the holidays haven't taken too much ofa toll on his women gymnasts as they prepare to reopen their season, hosting a pair of matches this week in the Smith Fieldhouse BYU, ranked No 17 nationallyin the latest National Statistical Service for Gymnastics’ coaches poll, will battle smallcollege power Boise State in a 7 p.m. competition on Thursday. Saturday afternoon the Cougars will host a triangular meet with seventh-ranked Nebraska and Montana State beginning at 1:30 p.m Entering the new year’s action a concerned Coach Hill said his team has been back practicing for over a week trying to get back into shape following the Christmas layoff. “'T just hope everyone else is havi the same problems we're having,” Hi said. “It will be a couple of weeks before we'll be backto the fine tune we were in before the break.”” Among the coach’s worries is the vaulting condition of Jan Shelley. Shel- ley, who hasn't vaulted since BYU met this same Boise State team Nov. 30, twisted her ankle over vacation and is questionable. Hill plans to determine her ability to compete prior to the week's matches. When the Cougars first competed against Boise State they scored anew school record of 141.80 points. According to Hill that markis still the highest scored in the nation competitively this season. Boise State, led by Lori Talbot, is highly regarded by the BYU coach and often places among the nation's top 15 small colleges, he said. Saturday's triangular match-up with Nebraska is expected to provide the Cougars with stiff test. Led by Patty Gerard and Rene Reisdorff the Cornhusker women captured the Iowa Invitational in Novemberwith a season high team score of 138.15. Montana State's team comes into the match as an unknown quantity. Although notlisted in the statistical service’s leaders column, BYU’s Jan Shelley (36.45) and Deena Robbins (35.95) own higher marks than any of the top 10 all-around athleteslisted. Likewise, the Cougars’ Debbie Moore and Liz Johns have scores high enough to place them amongthe top 10. th Thursday's 7 p.m. match and Saturday's 1:30 p.m. contest will be conducted in the Smith Fieldhouse. Admission to the event will be $2 for adults and $1 for high school students with activity cards. BYU staff and students will be admitted free of charge.
