Inflation Seen Spur to Unions NEW YORK (UPI) — An upsurge in union membership — a distinct turnaround from the trend of the last few years — is being forecast by some labor experts. Richard U.Miller, a business professor specializing in labor relations at the main campus of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, said the unions conceivably could double their membership in the 1980s as a result of such a turnaround. He thinks continuing inflation will provide the biggest impetus to resurgent unionism because it will make times harder for workers, increase their feeling of insecurity and make them determined to wring more money and greater security from employers. Audrey Freedman, labor relations specialist for the Conference Board, an independent business °87 research fo, also predicts a resurgenceof union membership. She thinks the biggest gain will be in commerce and finance. She would not be surprised to see a large new financial workers union established that would organize workers in financially-oriented businesses that are not now unionized and perhaps take over some workers from existing unions with their consent. The Conference Board recently sponsored a seminar of seven industriallabor experts who came to the conclusion that 1980 is going to be a tough year for jobs in the United States because of continuing inflation of 10 to 12 percent, a rise in unemployment and ‘‘zero economic growth in the economy.” OUR VESTED SUITS ON SALE TWO-PANT VESTED SUITS Reg. to $160 a good selection of poly/wool vested suits. (UPI Telephoto) Liquor Industry Starts Plans To Enterthe All- Metric Era WASHINGTON (UPI) — Amongtipplers, 1980 may be remembered as the year in whichpints, fifths, quarts and half-gallons of hard liquor disappeared from U.S.stores. The distilled spirits industry enters the “allmetric’ era Jan. 1 — and thestuff that drinks are madeof must be measuredin milliliters and liters from now on. Products bottled before New Year's Day may continue to be marketed and sold under the old system until stocks are exhausted.’ The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Treasury agency which regulates the alcoholic beverage industry. has approved six metric sizes for distilled spirits. | A half gallon is 64 ounces. The new metric sizes are: 50 ml(1.7 fluid ounces); 200 ml (6.8 fl 0z.); 500 ml(16.9 fl oz.); 750 ml (25.4 fl oz.), 1 liter (33.8 fl. oz.) and 1.75 liters (59.2 fl. oz).
