Voelker hopes to be able to re-establish the birds of prey in areas of several western states where they aren't found any more. In top photo at left, Bili Voelker looks at Pride, on stand at left, his six-year-old prize semen donor, while he holds a young female Golden Eagle that was bred by artificial insemination at his farm. Using techniques developed at Cornell University, Voelker has hatched five Golden Eagle chicks and hopes to repopulate areas of Colorado, Wyoming and Oklahoma Lowerleft photo shows three Golden Eagle chicks — at one week, 3 weeks and 6 weeks old — which were bred by artificia! insemination at Voelker's farm this spring. The St. Louis Audubon Society is supporting his work on endangered species, and Voelker hopes to makethe eaglehis pilot bird for further studies of breeding other species. eagle breeder, in lower right photo, dis. plays some of his father's collection of Eagle feathres in his home. His father found that great numbers of birds were being slaughtered and started saving tail and wing feathers. The Cosmos 1129 satellite, was sent into space aboard a Vostok spacecraft and will stay up for 19 to 20 days. Only fruit flies have been bred in space before and their offspring developed normally. Ofthe 38 rats launched, six females will be impregnated by two males under weightless conditions several days after the start of the space flight, according to Oleg Gazenko a leading Soviet space scientist and director of the Institute of Biomecical problems. “For the first time in history research In addition to rats, the biosatellite carried Japanese quail eggs in an incubator. Soviet scientists said the quail — if they hatch properly — could become a prime source of food aboard long space flights and in the biological lifesupport system. The spaceshipalso carried an outer space ‘greenhouse’ to grow Maize, cabbage and flax without humanaid. The mission was the third in a SovietAmerican effort to see how thelackof gravity in orbital flight affects life processes. The next step in the cooperative effort will be theflight of primates ina Soviet spacecraft in 1981. Soviet scientists have been invited to participate in American spacelab flight aboard the space shuttle in 1983- Eight-pane!
