Show CMI Thursday Developed by NASA Orem Doctor Has September 27. 1979. THE HERALD. Provo, Utah—Page 25 TL Eye Test Computer all 6 St0res. New ‘Astronaut’ ‘ By BRUCE KING 4 special eye computer developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to test the eyesight of astronauts is nowavailable to private physicians, and an Orem doctor has one It is the “6600 Auto-refractor,”° and a model rests in the office of Roland K Monson, 0.D., on 560 S State, Suite J4, in Orem The computertests visual acuity It, and another one just like it in Salt Lake City, are the only such computers in Utah. They cost $33,000 each According to Acuity Systems 'nc., makerof the instrument, the computer is now being used by doctors around the world to provide the most accurate eye measurements possible ‘Thepatient simplylooksinto the computer through a window, and it measures the eye to determine if glasses or contact lenses are needed. The examination takes unly two or three minutes ‘The instrument takes precise mechanical measurements of the eye, then computes the necessary lens power to correct a person's vision,” Dr Monson said. “As the person views a picture that goes in and outof focus, a technician activates four beamsoflightthat project off the cornea and retina of each eye. As this projection takes place, the computer calculates the eyes’ refractive errors.”” Patients still look through lenses at an eye chart after the computer tests,Dr. Monsonsaid, but only a few. Results from the tests are dialed into ter, or trial lenses, and patients decide whichof prescribed lenses best aid their eyes. In this way, the most accurate prescriptions possible are obtained. “The instrument is especially beneficial to young children, seniorcitizens, deaf or retarded people, and people with a e barrier,’ Dr. Monson explained. ‘People in these groups often have trouble understanding manyof the questions the doctor asks them aid becomefrustrated. With the eye computer, a two-year-old can receive as accurate an examinatlon as an adult.” Dr. Monson has already tested an 18-month-old child and a five-year-old deaf-and-dumbgirl. He has also tested an elderly Vietnamese man who could not Having them read the eye chart would have been futile, Dr. Monson said, because they could not communicate what they were seeing. With the eye com- puter, however, communication isn’t fundamental ‘The optometrist explained the instrument saves 1 from the sometimes frustrating experience of deciding which lens is better,‘this, or this.’’ It also helps evaluate the accuracy of contact lenses. “When contact lenses are to retard the progression of myopia (near-sightedness), in orthokeratology (normalization of myopia using contact lenses), or in cases involving Keratoconus, the eye computer evaluates the contactlens prescription and aids in these corrective programs.’ Patients still undergo a complete eye examination following the computer tests, Dr. Monson said. A thorough examination is necessary to check for problems not dit by the eye computer and to verify the computer's results. It is also necessary to check for eye disease. “The eye computer is used to find and measure nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism,” Dr. Monson concluded. ‘It also picks up clues of cataracts and other eye diseases by alerting the operator that he is not getting to the back of the patient's eyes. The instrumentdoesnoteliminate the need for the doctor, but it is a tool to improve diagnosis and treatment of the patient’s eye problems.” Sensibly Priced Value: Amana Radarange 349.95 Mfg. sug.list 399.95 model RR-7DA has the same high speed performance as the top-of-the-line Amanas.A solid value.
