Show ep W",yrri wrr' v qpny - DODODr . Lancers look For Win Over By DAVE WIGHAM LAYTON - Last Friday prior to their' game with Bountiful, things were looking good for the Layton roundballers. They had just knocked off unbeaten Clearfield the week before and were favored to beat the Braves and claim first place in the region. THE AFTER game however things in the league were still in a big mess, thanks to the Braves upset of the Lancers. Now instead of at the top of the heap the Layton crew find themselves one game behind those Falcons and in a tie with View-moand Roy. This Friday the issue could be cleared a little when the Lancers invade Roy for a big match. The two teams will be involved in Tuesday encounters with Layton heading up to Sky View and the Royals hosting those pesky nt Braves. Both clubs will be favored in their first games but on the other hand both are capable of being beaten. CONCERN of the Layton faithfuls has to be the physical condition of their big man Gordon Anderson. In the opening minutes of the MAIN Bountiful contest Gordon caught someone's hand or finger above the eye causing him sbme double vision problems. Gordon did return to the game but never did get into the flow of it after the eye injury. Layton will definitely need the services of Anderson to stay with the Royals. First time around the Lancers beat the Royals using the home floor to do it, this time Roy embarrassing loss to View-mowhile the Lancers had just knocked off previously nt unbeaten Clearfield. surroundings. Anderson will be headed for a matchup with the Roy big man Mark Sindle. n IN THE confrontation the fans will be seeing two of the best in the Sindle-Anderso- EASY TO predict right, a cakewalk for the Layton team. Well the Braves won the game and climbed back into the picture for a state berth. Coach Mike Hall had indicated that he was looking for the right combination in his players, the ones who would play together. He found them last week in the Laytcn win. EVERYONE WHO played for the Braves played well. By DAVE WIGHAM - WOODS CROSS If the old saying the rich get richer and the poor get poorer holds true this week, then the South High basketball team is in deep trouble. THIS FRIDAY the Cubs THE LANCERS have some quick guards in their stable, Dave Burke, Tracy Chatwin and Willy Femeau and Coach Moon might decide to alternate these three on the sharp shooter from Roy keeping a fresh man on him all game. have the task of facing the hotest club in the 3A ranks at - this time in the Woods Cross team. The Cats have just earned the tag of being named as the number one 3A club in the state of Utah. Woods Cross and South are about as opposite as day and The Cats have everything going for them with a perfect 0 league record. South is 6 and still looking for that first win in Region Four action. night. One big advantage the Layton team has over the Royals is in the forward position. Matt Stireman has been improving each week and is a great offensive 6-- 0-- threat while big Brandon WOODS CROSS has established stars in the likes of Mark Mark McCleery, LeCheminant and Brent Horton while the Cubs are still looking for someone who can score regularly. South has lost a lot of school support from the students, basketball just doesnt seem to be high on the list. The Wildcats have one of the best studentbodies in the area, they support this team both at home and on the road. Flint will always be around the boards at both ends of the floor. them up then it looks like the post spot is a standoff with Layton maybe having a slight edge. The guard spot is the Royals strong point while Layton dominates up front. Roy has the home floor, which each week seems to mean less. Layton is mad over the loss to Bountiful and they want a find piece of the title-the- yll a way to win. SOUTH HAD the. difference between working up steam and generating a fog. -- Times, Louisville. : a long tradi- tion of winning basketball games and making the annual appearance to the state tournament, yet in the recent years the Cubs have been absent from the tournament. Blaine didnt miss a shot all night and his field goal attempts all came from fifteen feet out or more. Also in the double figure ALL SEASON Coach Hall has been saying that his club could beat anyone if they played together. They accomplished that fete last week and as it turned out the coach spoke the truth. Bountiful looked more organized, especially on offense, in this game than in the past. They showed patience and worked for the open shot and usually hit it. win gave the kids the confidence they can play with anyone in this league so I believe well be tough on everyone in the second round." To stop the Bobcats Coach Hall will have to come up with a way to stop guard Rob Stevens who is averaging 18 enpoints a game. In the first counter with the Braves this 61 guard scored a game high NEXT UP for the Braves, following a Tuesday night encounter with Roy, will be Sky View in their biggest game of the season. Leading scorer for the Royals is guard Freddie Fernandes who could be a problem for the Lancers. Fred is averaging about 19 points an outing and his quickness will be the main MATCHING Blaine Benard turned in one of the best performances by 31 state going head to head. Both are excellent outside shooters and rebounders. Anderson has the advantage of being a little quicker and better at going to the basket but in all probability these two will offset each other. familiar the enjoys By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL The secret in high school basketball in Region One seems to be to check the week before to see what each team did. Take the Braves and Lancers last week. Bountiful was coming off an oy Club . in league play. The Cubs are no pushover for anyone. THE BEST player on the floor for the Cubs will be Anthony Nelson, a heady senior who has started every game since enrolling at the Salt Lake school. Nelson is currently averaging 13 points a game. Woods Cross has their big man in the middle--Mar- k McCleery who is scoring around 20 points a game. Mark is definitely the main concern for the smaller Cubs, at 65 Mark towers over everyone the South team can put on the floor. EASY TO figure out, play a zone and sag inside on McCleery. Go ahead and Mark LeCheminant (14 points per game), Jeff Ostler, Brent SHOULD be a long day for the Cubs as the Woods Cross bunch is simply too good for them. The South players have pride though and will battle, along with Nelson will be Hal Sorenson, Rick Thomas and Richard Stayner wholl keep this game respectable. Look for a Wildcat win but the Cubs wont hand it to them. '. .. Weberat Bountiful V Roy at Viewmont ' Clearfield at Ldytoh ' Davis at Box Elder1 . In the opening game between these two clubs the Braves didnt play well at all and lost a five pointer to the Bobcats on the Sky View floor. Going into this past week the Darts were sitting near the top of the league standings with a good 1 record. THEN THE Darts dropped a close game to Box Elder on Tuesday, a game they shouldnt have lost. Then before they could get their act together they were beaten by the league leading Woods 3-- Cross club. Those two defeats put the Darts in the middle of the league with a 3 mark with an important contest facing them thisFriday when they travel up to Ogden to battle the Ben Lomond team. AT THIS time the Darts are tied for fourth spot in the league with that 3 record, tied with Box Elder. Woods Cross is up on top with a mark, then Ogden at 1 followed by Logan at Right behind the Darts though is the Ben Lomond club with a 4 mark. A win by the Scots this week would pull the Darts down or the Scots up. Whichever way you look at it the Darts would be in trouble with a loss. 3-- i I I I I I I I I l I I I Li L sHstsCiilLk SAVE $2.00 or $1.00 or both WITH THIS COUPON you can save $2.00 off the regular price of any large pizza, or $1.00 off the regular price of any medium sized Pizza Hut pizza or both. This year, his last at the school, hes pouring in 22 points an outing. The Darts will more than likely give Tillman his points and try to shut off the other four players on the floor. Davis is getting good scoring production from senior Wes Coonradt and junior Jeff Emery. Jeff, a good shooter, is averaging 15 points in league play while Wes, who is improving each game, is clipping along at 13 points each game. THESE ARENT the only people on the Darts team that can score. Seniors Brad Petersen and Mike Mounteer have had good games in the scoring area but have not been as consistent as the other two. This is what makes the Darts a good club. They dont need scoring from one man each night, it seems like different people take up the slack each game. Coonradt could be the key to MAIN difference in these two clubs would have to be balance. While the Darts look for scoring from a lot of different players, the Scots look for one man to run the show in Robbie Tillman. Undoubtedly Tillman is a top performer, one of the best.
