But strong as a compliment to a woman? When did it start? Who started it? And who buys it? Starting with the last question first: The answer is, a lot of people men and women cheer strength as an attractive quality in females. It can be physical, mental or both. Paring the philosophy to its essence, you can call it character. Also, integrity, honesty, perseverance ... maybe even it loyalty. As character, wasnt only accepted, it was expected from the heroines of pioneer movie epics or westerns. So, though todays feminists for might endorse strong advocates of their cause, they didnt invent it as a virtue. Probably few people still alive met or even saw, Sarah Bernhardt (she died in 1923), but her reputation as a blazing force onstage and a strong-wille- d woman in her private life, keep her tantalizing legend alive. Strength isnt a new thing on television, either. One of the main attractions for the continuing success in around the syndicated world for The Avengers is g its heroines, notably the second, Diana re-ru- karate-choppin- Rigg, a Shakespearean actress who took on the role initially for the money. Strong of course reached cliche proportions on screen when Wonder Woman and The Bionic Woman reigned. But with a strong degree of character that would strain the resources of the enshrined pioneer women took on a glow when it was used by Kathy Morris, from whom you may expect much show news in the future. Her life story has just been filmed as a CBS movie (air date: Jan. 9) with Penelope Milford portraying Kathy. The title, Seizure, refers to the first symptoms that the Kathy had a brain tumor. Now, though the tumor is gone, she still has occasional seizures, perhaps due to complications. Medication helps. So do some of the tricks shes learned for psyching herself. She moves smoothly, sings beautifully and has premiered with her new nightclub show. Ahead? Yes, she wants to do musical comedy some day. How about My Fair Lady? No, no, says Kathy. I dont want to play Eliza Dolittle. I dont like her. Shes not strong. The series begins Friday, Jan. 11, with a look at hew free markets work. Friedman explains Adam Smiths idea that the free market coordinates the activities of millions of people who are strangers to one another. The free market, combined with Jeffersons declaration of human liberty, produced eonomic miracles in the U.S. and a standard of living that is the envy of the world. The same miracle is taking place today in Hong Kong, where the government has deliberately chosen not to direct the economy. Those people today who call themselves liberal have misappropriated the term because for them it simply means they are liberal with other peoples money. Free to Choose is a series of 10 hour-lon- g programs in which Friedman, whos been called the foremost conservative economist in the United States today, clarifies some of the issues facing the U.S. Each program begins with a half-hodocumentary film, shot on locations around the world. The documentaries then serve as the basis for an discusadditional half-hosion between Dr. Friedman and exponents of different (and usually opposing) points of view.
