Government policies are heavily biased toward economic stimulation in order to keep unemployment low. Government is much more likely to respond to signs of rising unemployment than it is to signs of overfull employment and inflation. Such an expansionist policy therefore, is highly inflation prone. 3. IN ITS efforts to respond to demands for economic and social reform, government has instituted programs for a massive redistribution of incomes. The increased regulatory role of government in recent years has been an important factor in the rise of inflation during this period. 6. Government has isolated itself from the ravages of inflation. In fact, the highly progressive federal tax structure results in proportionately more lax revenue being collected w hen the inflation rate is high. Since government benefits monetarily from inflation. there is little direct incen-liv- e for government to control inflation. FOUNDATION analysts point out that inflation acts as giant lottery where income and assets are redistributed in an arbitrary and perverse manner. It serves to reward speculation and improvidence by penalizing thrift and prudence. The study also notes that inflation has ominous consequences for the future growth of the nation and the maintenance of our high standard of living. ARTHUR F. Bums, former K4 gov-rrffc- wuti today has brought our ctsyntry 10 a pwnt of economic cows unmatched hi tis dangers since the Great Depression of the UJthes" past vear. the inflaIKci tion fate in Ihe U.S. was 14.3 percent. IN URMS of specifics, the JJ ' away Ted Woolley, boating su- pervisor for the Utah Stale vision of Parks and Recreation, reminds hunters who use boats in connection with this sport to check their craft for the required equipment. Di- MOST OF these requirements are identical to the general state and federal boating requirements. However, for obvious and practical reasons some have been modified to satisfy the operation peculiar to airboats. Mr. Woolley said, There must be one Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) which is readily accessible for each person aboard. MENDENHALL has analyzed more than 10,000 food storage supplies with the Utah State University Food Storage Survey. The survey is designed to use a computer to give people an estimate of how long their food storage would actually last. The consumer fills out a form listing the number of persons in the family and the quantities of different types of food the family has stored. The inforcomputer analyzes the mation and tells the consumer 13 how many days supply of recommended daily allowances the food storage will provide. DR. ME.NDENHALL says this computer program was needed because most people dont keep good records of what they store. BECAUSE motorcycle usage is increasing rapidly, we feel the public should be reminded that safe motorcycling requires training, skills and equipment quite different than that of an automobile driver. Studies have shown that motorcyclists involved in traffic accidents have a much grea- ter chance of being injured or killed than do automobile passengers. It is also well recognized that this chance can be substantially reduced by the use of protective headgear. The Un- ited States Department of concluded in a Transportation 1979 report that motorcyclists who do not use safety helmets slippage. Predictably, aimless raised in fragchildren often bemented homes come aimless adults. Many become social deficits, costing society vast sums of money, time and talent spent on programs designed to clean up the mess that failed homes have left behind. EXAMPLES abound. For instance, countless studies by now have confirmed a correlation between juvenile delinquency and family disintegration. Usually these studies are done by locating juvenile offenders and then backtracking through their family life histories. Columnist William Raspberry has chronicled the work of a researcher named Dr. Samuel L. Woodard, who has accumulated some remarkable data by taking the opposite route: Studying children who have succeeded against all the odds poverty, racial prejudice and inferior schools and then attempting to find something these children have in common. WHAT DID he find? He found that these successful children almost invariably came from homes in which W , Is i t 'J ft Ill4,1a 4K?ulli IV Mr i.MV 111 I''? w.i-s- ti TtNii " ,1 i.i-W.- 1 i,.4 I1 Da t iii.i1iariyftAftMfx8 M flM'1-- !, ftl., V M4 i Mill I f IN I,j; ftl,? 1,41 ft, Ml? , 4 -, ft J .,m;,4- . j. t I1! ft(,? ft, ift.-.- Vli-ftS- M I 0 CMJl 4 ( . As William Rasberry writes, children who are able to break out of the cycle of poverty are those children whose families have made them understand from the beginning that poverty is a circumstance, like the weather, and not a definition of who they are and what they may become. They have been from their earliest v required years to meet high standards. As a result, they have set high standards for themselves. WE TEACH our children some of lifes most important lessons within the walls of pur homes, and these are lessons that can be made up nowhere else. Every home either knowingly or unknowlingly gives it children a basis for evaluating life. Its a classroom for the teaching of values. In ancient Greece, the Athenians understood the role of the home in promoting the best values of society. The Geeks prominently displayed signs at the entrances to their homes which read, Let nothing enter here but what is good. LET AMERICANS begin this year to this principle, and to admit into their homes only what is good for the home and for its members. The result would not only be stronger, happier families, but also a stronger, freer America. 1 NEXTf MAKE certain they understand what you them to cooperexpect of them. That is. you expect create not and problems in the teachers w their ith ate classroom. Dont hesitate to meet with their teachers to discuss the area of discipline.
