Daniels, often called the kingfish of southern rock n roll, spoke with Nickelodeon recently at his annual Volunteer Jam in Nashville. Here are some excerpts from the interview: N: Charlie, youve got a son. If you were 15, what would you be doing now? CD: I guess the same thing hes doing playing football and chasin girls. N: What does your son think about what you do? CD: Ive been doing it all his life so its real commonplace for him. Weve had a little more success the last couple of years and hes taken it pretty much in stride. N: What do you tell a young person who says, Charlie, Im a musician. Where do I start? CD: Well, first of all, if going to be a musician, or whatever, you should love what youre doing. Make sure Gavin MacLeod goes back to Radio City By RUTH THOMPSON In show business, where there are more talented and d actors than there are opportunities, just getting a role can be cause for cele- brition. For some, yes. And theres no happier case history than that of Gavin MacLeod, who, as the captain of ABCs Love Boat" has a major hit on his hands, and loves it. He even goes on periodic diets so the writers will consider him trim enough to rate romantic encounters now and then. Gavin is one of those who knew from the time he was five when he related to an applauding audience at a that acting was for pageant him. I agree with you: I liked it because it was an ioned mystery which gave the viewers a chance to match wits with Ellery. If an Ellery Queen series is ever made again, and its possible because there have been other Queen series on both radio and television, it will be different from the one you recall, level-heade- Charlie Daniels N: Do you think that makes it easier for kids to communicate with their parents? I also think success is relative to what a person wants to accomplish. Dont judge your career by someone elses. People are different. God made us all different. N: When we were growing up, a major influence was the Beatles. Now, almost 15 years later, John Lennon gets shot. What are your thoughts about kids growing up today, in this kind of society where life and death are so fast? CD: Its a real shame that anyone would have to be exposed to that kind of thing. Unfortunately its a fact of life. There have been people that go off the deep end and do things like this guy who shot John Lennon. I think the affect it would have on young children would be one of horrifying them. N: It must be really tough growing up now... . CD: Well, theres a lot of pressure. Maybe all the privileges of being an adult shouldnt be extended to teen-- " agers. But in the areas where they can accept responsibility, it should be given. I think it helps them grow up. N: What do you think about kids who run away? CD: I think its something lacking at home, a communication breakdown. Seems like parents have a habit of just closing out a childs wishes. Sometimes a kid has something on his mind and he really needs to discuss it. Some parents will not sit down and talk. N: What do you think would bring them back? CD: Understanding. There are very few incorrigible people in the world. There are some, but at that age, I dont think they are incorrigible. Theres something wrong at home or they wouldnt be running away to start with. N: Does patience have anything to do with it? CD: Patience has everything to do with it. N: Were you patient when you were younger?
