If the hour and time ever arrived that coaches in Region One would get together and select a most valuable player for their season, Weber High's Kelly Johnson would probably head the list. COACH CRAIG Hansen, whose team presently leads Region One race with an mark, said this about the ;BVarrior's star. There isn't a SJoach in the state that couldn't ixoach him and by that I simply 3nean he is as coachable a kid 'as I have ever seen and Ive never coached him one minute. It must be a pleasure for Dick Conolly. Ted Smith, the Roy High mentor says, Kelly is a classic, the kind of player that any ifte THE 4 center is valuable in many ways than one. His 26 points last Friday night enabled Weber to demolish Layton and once again qualify for the state playoffs. But besides being touted as the No. I scorer and rebounder in Region One, Kelly's attitude about life and the game of basketball seem to be of most value to him and his teammates. Dick Conolly, the Weber coach, says, "The first minute Kelly entered the court for tryouts when he was a sophomore, I knew we had something special. Kelly must have been something special for he made Conolly's final cut and was the only sophomore to 6-- red-hair- 1 make the varsity squad. THE FOLLOW ING season, Kelly was to start in every Warrior game. The Warriors haven't made shambles of Region One and they won't be able to defend their Region One title this time around, but Johnson says the team hat had fun. The ough schedule in preseason had us lined up with some pretty tough opponents. But I know it has made us a better team, admitted Johnson. HE DESCRIBES East High as the best they've played and says Clearfield and Davis have played the best defense against them. Johnson easily leads the region in scoring and nearly carries a 25 point average. If rebound stats were kept, youd probably find him right at the top or near that too. BUT THERE was a turnaround in a game that has made all the difference in Johnson's season. "We were playing at East. I had scored only four points in the first half and as I walked toward the locker room for halftime, I began wondering what people were thinking about me. Most people knew that I had started all last year and many of them were expecting me to rip it up this season. pre-seas- $ mmmrn igfimfif hi "liaffi 801 which will include This program will be conducted by Layton Highs wrestling coach, Mike Hansen. I went out the second half with a different outlook on things and ended up scoring 36 points and finishing the game with 40. Besides being captain of the basketball squad, Kelly is also the studentbody president for Weber High this year. THERE HAS been times throughout the season when re- combining studentbody sponsibilities and basketball didn't quite mix. But it has become easier with each game. I want to do well in both and get frustrated when I don't, said Johnson. I Besides Coach Conolly's ability to teach him about defense and rebounding. Johnson credits much of his success in sports to his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Johnson, Jr. of Pleasant View. Theyve never missed a game that I can remember," says Kelly. HE ALSO passes a bunch of praise on his younger brother, Kirt, who plays alongside him at Weber. "In a game were playing together, but usually in practice we are on different sides. We have fun blocking each others shot and we joke about things like that a lot, Kelly stated. PLAYERS, as well as the coaches around the league, admire their counterpart. Johnson made numerous friends with many of the players he competes against in last summer's BCI basketball tournament. Johnson was told that his 25 point scoring average was fairly impressive and might get him a spot on some college team some day. In his usual fair mannered way, Kelly reWere certainly plied back. hoping so."
