The Falcons then went on to win their first two games in state play, then lost to Layton again and Womens, Girls Softball Will Begin W&t.rfy, A Clearfield Rec. Dept, is offering a girls and womens softball league which will begin competition in There will be three leagues: Pebbles Hare and April Hatch paced Layton Highs girls basketball team to the state championship last Saturday evening at West High School. Both are strong candidates for positions. STRONG CAGE DUO elementary school girls, grades junior high school, and ladies, girls, grades ages 16 and up. 4-- forever and hardly unforgettable at that. Last Saturday evening at West High School, Layton 0 downed Cottonwood to stake claim to the 1981 state championship. It might be some time before someone comes along and 58-5- matches the feats the Layton Highs womens basketball team demonstrated during the course of the year. All in all, it was just one incredible season of basketball. IT WAS GREAT, said Pebbles Hare. We always are playing together. Most teams were confuted on how to defend us because no single player on our team hogs the glory and scores all the points. It's our balanced attack that won all those 21 games," she said. If it wasn't Pebble's heads up play, then it was Elise Smith.s clutch shots down the stretch. If it wasnt these two, then try Korryn Weise and her superior ballhandling and her driving turning jump shots. If these three blanked out, then old faithful, April Hatch could always pull them through. And A FEW YEARS from now, Layton fans might remember a few of these points; A year in which the Lancers claimed their first ever state basketball champion-- : ship. COMPLETLNG the entire season with a perfect record of 21 wins and no losses. A vow the year before when they lost to Sky line in the state semifinals that they were coming back to win it the following year. Cynthia Barnes and Terry Contreas were always contributing too. TOM PERKINS, one of the few men who coach a womens basketball team on AT FIRST, I didnt think we could go the entire season without a loss, but after winning a couple preseason games, I felt more positive than ever that we could, said Pebbles. the high school level in Utah and how 12 or 13 girls grew to deeply appreciate him. A winter in which the men's basketball team didn't fare too well but the women put it all together and had the school rally around them to win a region and state title. A YEAR IN which the Lancers were to play their Clearfield close four times and win everyone of arch-rival- s, those games. A year which two of Layton's girls were nominated for positions. THESE are but a few of the remembrances that will live on Pebbles and April, two of Laytons members who are presently being nominated for positions, had a lot of compliments for their coach, Tom Perkins. "A great coach. He really knew his stuff. He had a special way all year long of conveying his message without losing his temper or getting up and yelling all the time. His experience in the clutch situations is what pulled us through several times," admitted the pair. all-st- . BOTH PEBBLES and April are expected to go on and compete on the college level but they could be playing hun- dreds of miles apart too. said April. Weve worked together for three long years and had a coach the final two years that tried to teach us everything we had to know to win. April's family is planning to move to Texas where April hopes to get a chance to play. Pebbles could stay in Utah to play. I knew we could do it. mm Jk. Df -- , s , PROBABLY Donna's main strengths on the court were her composure and ball handling ' , finally beat Weber by nine to claim the third place position. "If there was anything frustrating about my senior year at Clearfield, it had to be that we couldnt beat Layton in basketball. We had four chances and blew everyone of them, said Donna in a frustrating manner. 7-- THE ELEMENTARY junior high girls league fine women athletes come through her halls. Individuals wishing to participate should plan to wear boots and clothing suitable for hiking. THE GROUP will gather at the southwest corner of the Bountiful High School parking lot at 9 a.m. and will to points in Bountiful, car-carav- Centerville and Layton to observe deer winter range conditions. The outing is called a range ride because in most areas of the state the survey is done by horseback. Due to the steep nature of the county's mountainside and to prevent excess damage to areas by horses it has been decided to conduct the ride on foot. The ride is very informal and persons wishing to attend may leave whenever they desire. PARTICIPANTS are welcomed to assist the Davis County Conservation officer and Forest Service personnel in accessing range conditions and give input as to local deer hunt regulations. The public will also be invited to record observations as to possible deer winter kills that may he encountered on the ride and turn this information over to the responsible officer. Range rides will be conducted throughout the state in varying localities and the public is invited to attend any of these that will be held through the months of March and April. Information as to dates and places can be obtained by calling the Ogden Office of the Division of Wildlife Re sources. THE RANGE ride is one part of the process that goes into the determining of deer season dates, times and permit numbers. Information from post season deer classification, highway mortality, win- when you are as big as your mother, Joan? Joan - Oh! Reducing exercises, I suppose. - ter loss, hunting success, weather conditions, and damage complaints are looked at in addition to range ride results in determining the upcoming deer hunt. The general idea behind the range ride is to involve the public in making the observa-- 1 tions needed to effectively manage the states deer herd. It is a good way to learn the basic food requirements of deer as well as to get some good exercise and a fantastic view of the county from the mountainside. The ride will ------ last about three hours and will be cancelled in the event of precipitation. Bring in this coupon at time of order and get $10.00 off your eye exam. No other discounts apply. Coach Jones doesnt see Donna participating in track and field again for the second year, because of the same reason, her bad knees. The knees are bad enough to require surgery, but after a full season of volleyball and basketball, they need a good long rest.
