As we began league play I think the their toe only once at Weber. The 1 league mark deadlocked them with the Warriors at seasons end. Overall the Falcons were 19-- just one game shy of the season which was a goal of every girl on the team. Of course it hurt some of them that we didnt reach our goal, but I think in a couple of weeks theyll look back and see how great a season they had, said Jones. HILLCREST dropped a 9-- bomb on the Clearfield girls during the first quarter of action last Saturday night and went on to snare a 0 vic54-4- 20-w- in tory that gave the Huskies their third state title in seven years. It was the matter of just one bad quarter, said Margo Jones of Clearfield, the highly successful womens coach. We missed seven shots from four feet out in that quarter and you just dont do things like that against a good team like Hillcrest and expect to win. THE RESPECTED Falcon coach, who has already put one state title in the bag, said she had her team trying every possible defense against the Huskies. After the initial quarter of action, Clearfield settled down and played the kind of basketball that took them to the finals, although it wasnt quite enough to measure up to the steady play of the Hillcrest gals. It wasn't difficult to detect the brokenheartedness spelled on the faces of the Clearfield girls as they made their way to the lockeroom. Jones summed it up the next day by saying, Sure the girls are brokenhearted they wanted a state championship just as much as any group Ive had. ' THE CLEARFIELD coach claims Region Two competition was keen in 1981-8- 2 but perhaps wasnt as competitive as it has been in recent years. Weber was pretty steady all year until they went to state. Layton was up and down, but had a good tournament, said the coach. Some called Region T wo the best region where Kearns, Hillcrest and Alta battle. But Jones didnt agree. They may have a little more consistency, but they were not a better region, she said. IT MAY have been players like Kelsey and Yamada that glued things together for Clear, field. Although they didn't score lots of points and star in the limelight like Tillman and Beene did, they kept the team together. Yamada scored only 22 points all year long but two of those helped Clearfield earn a berth in the semifinals. deceptive too, because she doesn't appear like that at all. Jodi wasnt always consistent, but she is human too, said KELSEY, who was cut from Jones. For the season, Beene led Region One in scoring with an 18.4 scoring average. She wasnt scared to drive hard for s or hit from the outside. Jenny may have a solid chance of playing college basketball. her ninth grade team and later reinstated after Jones asked she be given a chance to play, stood 1 in junior high. There was just too much 6-- there to let go. I think Michelle could play some college ball later on. As her coach I think she has reached only half her potential, said Jones. Siding with Beene all year IN SIX of the past seven basketball seasons, Clearfield teams have finished no lower than third place. In 1976 they on the guardline was Lori Hutchison, who ended up with the second leading shooting THE HUSKIES didnt shoot much better for the game, but their 41 percent was certainly enough to give them the win. The Falcons found themselves down by ten points in the fourth quarter and if it hadnt been for two combined presses, they may have lost. TO REPLACE the hopes for a team title isnt easy. Just ask Fred Lange who has coached swimming in Clearfield for a number of years. Although he never goes a season without attempting to win a title, the fact remains he and his swimmers are competing against more than just another team. Who knows? Someday swimming competition might thrive here. It may very well happen if Lange stays as committed to the sport as he has in the past. THE GAME went into overtime against Kearns and in the final seconds a hero stood out. No it wasnt Jennifer Beene or Jodi Tilman, who eventually made the team, but it was Betty Yamada who was fouled with no time remaining in overtime and after sinking both free throws te boosted Clearfield into the EVEN THOUGH there arent a bunch of trophies lined up in a glass trophy case like there is for football or basketball, I respect Lange for everything he has done for kids who chose the sport of swimming. third round. Against Alta in the third round, Clearfield did their homework and competely destroyed the Hawks. It was a game where the kids did exactly what we asked them to. almost a perfect game, said Jones. Beene, who hadn't played well in the two previous games, exploded for 25 points against Alta. In talking to Kris Boren and Julie Jurek the other day they likened Lange to a teddy bear. These two have been successful in the girls swimming world and they say they owe most of their success to Lange. CLEARFIELDS veteran womens coach admitted this past season could have been a disaster if her kids hadn't come ' together and become unified. We didnt have a lot of brilliant talent and we had the potential to have some real problems in playing team ball if the girls didn't realize we had one coach instead of 12. COACH LANGE seems to have a way of helping and work toward breaking their personal best. My hair smells like chlorine, my eyes hurt, and the days become longer after getting up so early to practice. But aside from all that. Coach 'Lange has a way of making practice meaningful. Of course, it all is worthwhile once they win. When Kris beat Michelle Jones from Roy for the 100 back title, the joy of winning was as ever meaningful as when her twin brother Greg helped the boys basketball team beat Woods Cross in the first round of the basketball tournament.
