Show . WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- VIS f NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MARCH 18. 1982 5) Want TitI Track, Baseball Previews Coming The king of baseball in our area last season was the Layton Lancers who were led by Brad Hawkins. In his first year as a head coach, he guided a team of players he had no prior knowledge of to a championship with Bonneville. k. N Va IN TRACK and field, the king of the hill there was Clearfield. It was the veteran track and field coach, John Flint who helped the Falcons to there best year ever in track and field. The Falcons ended up aus region champs and finished 1 1 points from Hillcrest for the coveted state championship. The articles on this page take a look at the teams Hawkins and Flint return with for a new season. In the future editions, other area track and field teams along with the baseball squads, will be covered in these pages. Coach John Flint and his star 400 meter man, Bubba Conley, sit with the trophy Clearfield captured in last years Region One race. It was the second consecutive championship for Flint. Can the falcons make it three in a row? another title, Flint said its more of a challenge to the kids, rather than a pressure situation. There are a lot of people after us which is what we want. All of that can only make our By KEITH DUNCAN Veteran track and field coach, John Flint, who has led Clearfield High to two consecutive Region One championships, says the situation at Clearfield this spring is a unique one. program that much stronger. said Flint. All in all Flint says the new season will be fun. Last year we had the kids to win big and we did. This season we will have to develop some kids and see what they can do, he said. I LIKE the situation we are the past we have been the favorite to win the league but at this moment youd have to favor either Roy in right now. In FLINTS philosophy or Bonneville to take the in track and field is numbers. In crown. Its always easier to settle recent years he feels the program has been successful because of deph. If you dont have the blue chip kids you can still pick up points with a lot of down and compete without pressure when you are not the team to beat. Id like to think we are there right now, said Flint. BONNEVILLE, by' the standards of most Region One coaches, should be the team to beat with Roy battling right behind them. The Falcons are coming off their best year ever in track and field where they finished second in state to Hillcrest last spring at Weber State College. The Clearfield coach says he has some athletes that are as excited as they've ever had at Clearfield. IF THERE is any pressure on them at all," said Flint, "Id have to say it's because they want to continue the great track and field tradition weve got going here at Clearfield. I can't remember the last time a team won three straight region championships. Since I've been around it hasn't happened. Perhaps there is a chance the kids can slip through the back door and make it three in a row." So when you talk about trying for a third title, Flint says there are some special challenges. It will be a rebuilding year where Clearfield will have to depend on a lot of young people. The Falcons will also have to do without an awesome field event crew that lined the roster last year. "But field event people can be made, even though you must have some physical abilities and attributes. 1 think we will come through," said Flint. CLEARFIELD is coming off the best indoor season theyve ever had and those that attended the five or six meets seem excited and prepared for the challenge of winning a third , straight title. Over 85 kids showed up on the day Flint opened the doors to a new season. That is down a little from last year but Flint says he is excited about the number of sophomores that came out. TO SUM up the run for kids placing. Of course, i, youve got to have some strong kids, but if a team can' score- -' respectable in every event, theyll win meets." said Flint. In the sprints, Brian Wright leads the way after taking second in state in the 100 meters last year. Jimmy Phillips is right after him and in fact has been beating Brian in indoor meets. OTHER SPRINTERS to back Brian and Jimmy are Dean Fulger a junior and two sophomores, Todd Montavo and Ricky Smith. In the hurdles Clearfield will look to senior Mike Fahnert. He may be one of the better region hurdlers but he competes in a region where competition will be thick amoung several top athletes. Region One should be represented well in the hurdles when it comes time for state competition. ROBBIE SHERWOOD who is a junior, and two sophomores, Ray Dickson and Hal Moore should give Clearfield a good backup tandem in the highs. In the intermediate hurdles, the Falcons will go with Tracy Pitkin and Dean Garrett combined with some of the high hurdle people. Tracy should be the leader, however, after finishing fourth in the region last year. FOR Wright, Karl Wilson, Fulger and Phillips will man the sprint relay. The medley will be respectable again even though it isnt sure right now who will run it. Clearfield is the defending region champ in this event. The mile relay was the pride and joy of the Falcons last year until they were beaten in the state meet. Again Clearfield should be strong here. The Fal- con mile relay team took second in the Simplot games in Idaho. IN THE field events Clearfield will have to replace some good ones like Mark Carter who won the state title in the. shot put. Alan Holyoak now leads the way in the shot along with J.C. VonCollin, Robbie Browning, Cory Walker and Tony Bayer. Kim Thurgood and Steve Zeck have also looked promising. In the discus the Falcons have done quite well in recent years, but will be down this year. We have got to develop some people here," said Flint. VonCollin is the leader there after a seventh place finish in state last year. The Falcons also have Kyle Moosmann, Browning, Montavo and Steve Labato. IN THE javelin, Clearfield will try to fill the shoes of Kevin Porter who took the region last year, with Sean Williams, Dave Thprson, Doug Pasket, Kent Hepworth, Troy Barber or Sterling Allen. John Tisler will have to car-- . ry the lad for Clearfield in the jumps this season. He will be the number one guy in both the long jump and high jump. Ful- ger, Martin, Dickson, and Kevin Bums will back up the in the long jump. Back-up- s high jump include Burns, Dickson and Hal Schofield. IN THE 400 meters, Clearfield should be pretty strong with junior Bubba Conley and Wright leading out. Jared Martin also appeared tough in the 400 during the indoor circuit.' The 800 will include Mike Rhodes and Dave Kelly along with Dirk Barlow, Glen Coy and Bill Wilcox. THE POLE vault includes young guys like Blaine Fish-buTodd Blair, James Mor-rand senior Doug Threld. Overall the region has im- proved with Layton, Sky View and Weber getting better also. THE FALCONS may be blessed with some of their best in recent milers and years. Wilcox and Daren Lewis are just a couple of them. Richard Bouchard will son will be Coach Dick Micheals who Flint says has tremendous repore with the kids and spends a lot of time with the kids. "We will look to him for plenty of help this be strong and steady too. IM NOT GOING to put any more pressure on the kids. The kids know we were region champs last year and we have gotten off to a good start by doing that. "There is a good feeling because the kids know what I expect from them and they know I like to win and I know they like to win. But back in the back of their minds there is going to be pressure on them and on me to see if we can do it again. THE BIGGEST difference this spring over last, according to the second year head coach, is that Hawkins knows what he has. "Last year when I came in I knew Lance Brightshoe was a good hitter and Brian Murray could do this and that, but I had never seen them play. This year, however, I have a good idea who can do what and what I can expect out of them," said Hawkins. He feels the added knowledge is going to help him out. THOSE WHO follow Lancer baseoall would like nothing more than to see Layton win it all again. But in order to make it two in a row they will have to contend with teams like Bonneville who are blessed with a couple of talented pitchers. Even though the Lakers lost Cory Sylvester, they appear tough again. "Any time you talk about high school baseball, obviously you've got to talk about pitching," said Hawkins. Brad claimed the Royals of Roy would be tough too with Lance Jorgensen back who beat Layton in the state tournament last year with winning another game there too. the non-smok- er discount, (Bus.) 4 (Res) listen to him." continued Hawkins. Both Heath and THIS EARLY in the year with puddles of water seeing more time in the infield than Mike Bunting does, it may be Alan Gentry hit .5(H) last year. Gentry is the only outfielder back from last year and jokingly Hawkins told him the other day that we would have to play every outfield position. "I told him he'd have to get everything hit out there." said Hawkins. "because Alan can run and throw and he can go back on the ball well. I've spent some time with Alan and I feel comfortable with him." premature to predict posi- does feel confident that Bunting will play second base and Kenny Heath as the catcher. These are the only two positions Hawkins can say "for sure about" in the Lancer infield. "I was thinking about playing Mike at shortstop but don't know it yet." said Brad. Hawkins is looking to fill the 1 shortstop position with IN LEFT field the Lancers have Jeff Roberts who Hawkins feels will be good and just as good as the Lancers had at that position last year. "He'll have to work on some things, but with some help from Alan we'll be alright," said Brad. In right field Hawkins had no idea. If Merrill isn't pitching or playing the infield he could fill it. Also. Layton might go with Kilborne. a by the name of Rob Folgerman but he isn't sure quite yet. The Lancers will also have Paul Herald, a sophomore. who could battle for r the short position. move-i- n AT THIRD base, the Lancers have a list of hopefuls that include Mike Moss. Craig Kennedy and Jeff Moon. "That's two juniors or one senior to play third base but then again I know Kennedy THE BEST pitcher Layton has at this point is Heath, but Hawkins needs to find someone to catch him. He feels that either Moss or a sophomore could catch when Heath is pitching. Merrill is the second best pitcher but the coach said he could be the best if mentally he allowed himself to be. "He is good and will probably be our can play first, but I need a third baseman before I need a first baseman so we are seeing what Craig can do, said Hawkins. Another possible at first is Brad Merrill. I THINK if I were to start a game tomorrow, I might go with Mike Moss on first. Bunting on second. Folgerman at short and Kennedy at third. And of course we would go with Heath as the catcher." said Hawkins. When talking about Heath. Hawkins calls him amazing. "I'm going to have to use him on the mound this spring which I really don't want to do because he is just so good behind the plate. As far as a high school catcher he is as good as Ive seen in high school. number one pitcher with Heath as the number two. GENTRY WILL also throw a little along with Mike Kil- borne a senior. Brett Talbot could also throw as a junior. Overall the Lancers will be very young on the mound with only Kilborne and Genry as the seniors. "I'm excited about the new season. We are in a great league with a lot of competitive teams. We play Cyprus, Davis, Ogden and perhaps Viewmont in preseason. I'm just excited to get out there and get after it." said Hawkins HE CAN throw the ball, he leader and all the kids respect him.
