Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JUNE 3, 1982. i Clutch Performances Trigger Big Wins Fall Homes Heroics Keith Duncan Reflex Sports Ben Home, who can now call KAYSVILLE himself a graduate of Davis High School, couldnt have been happier about the way his Dart athletic career came to an end. FROM HIS sophomore year to last year, more people than he recognized the turnabout. One was his baseball coach, Kent Draayer, who commented, As a sophomore I didnt know if hed make it. But Ben went on to make a turnaround and go out his senior year as a winner. Home gave up summer ball last summer to attend as many football camps as possible. Consequently his football fortunes florished as he helped to lead the Region Four Davis squad to a tie for the league championship with Bountiful High. 180-degr- ee 97-ya- rd carried a big stick for the Darts, smacking three home runs. Usually one award is presented for athletic abilities, while another is based on athletic abilities and scholastic prowess. At Clearfield the Falcons named Karl Wilson and Brian Wright as their Top Athletes. Wilson lettered in three sports including football, wrestling and track. On the gridiron he totalled 630 yards as a tailback and on defense scored one of the highest totals of any player in a point system the Fal 17-- region. Wright participated in only one sport but his output in that one sport was brilliant. In track he started the season slower than expeetd but came back at the very close to win he Region One 100 meter title and the next week finish second in state in that event. He is probably the hardest hitter Ive had in a long while. As far as his catching duties, I believe Ben ranks with the best catchers that have attended this school and Ive had HELPED TO lead may be an understatement. Home directed the team from the quarterback position and it was his perfectly thrown pass to Spencer touchdown pass DeGraw that resulted in a that brought Bountiful down to defeat in the closing minutes of that fall contest. That touchdown pass had to be the highlight of my life, so far, said Home. Ive never been in a situation where so many guys were so happy at one particular time. HORNES HEROICS continued on into the spring too. Though it was disappointing not to be playing for n lead, 11-1- 0. I WANTED to win that game so bad and I know everyone else did too, said Horne. So with bases loaded and Home up at bat, he had his chance. And he made the best of it by slamming a home run long and far, probably the longest of the three homeruns he hit through the spring. Davis awarded its two top athletes last week also. Receiving top honors were Brian Taylor and Robert Steed. Taylor lettered in four sports. They include golf, basketball, tennis and track. The lanky 4 basketball great who is headed for BYU to play basketball for the next four years, played golf for John Dawson in the fall and after basketball performed with the tennis team and participated in the high jump in track. His greatest sport however was basketball where Brian finished the season with the most number of assists and points. On three different occasions he poured in 40 or more points and was a key figure in leading the Dart basketball team into the state playoffs. Steed was another three-spo- rt letterman, playing football, wrestling and performing in track and field. , 4-- A WHERE DOES he go from here? Ben is still undecided. He may end up going south to a Utah junior college to play baseball and there is an outside chance that he could end up at the University of Wyoming playing baseball where his brother played football. Regardless of where I go, I just want to continue my career for a little longer, said Ben. In track and field he claimed the region title in the shot put and later finished fifth in the state meet. The Lancers of Layton have named Alan Gentry and Mike Bunting as the top athletes for their year. 6-- In football it was Steed who was the silent leader on a team that tied for the region championship. He performed steady all year long from his tackle positions. On the wrestling mat he was a terror. Steed was beaten only three times all season long but the most frustrating one came in the finals for the championship in the state meet. He had to settle for second place. In his wrestling career at Davis High, Steed amassed over 90 varsity victories. 185-pou- Gentry played both football and baseball and at the same time carried a GPA of over 3.8. In football he was something short of a bolt of lightening. The running back scored many of the Layton touchdowns on long and short runs. Baseball is his favorite sport and it appears that Gentry will have a chance to play some college ball because of his exceptional ability in that sport. As a centerfiel-de- r he made some outstanding plays and was sparkling at the plate. He ended the season with a batting average of over .450. Bunting lettered in three sports for Layton. Mike saw some action in football as a quarterback and a middle linebacker, then played basketball for Coach Doug Moon on the baseball team. Bunting may be one of the smallest athletes in the area but regardless of his size, wouldnt be denied. He was a fierce hitter in football and was a very good reason why both the basketball and baseball teams enjoyed the success they did. cat-qui- DAVE WIGHAM CUPPER SPORTS o PreSctkgTh Fwtms Of fke Jm : : With the NBA championship series coming to an end and the annual college draft less than a month away, many people have asked me my opinion as to just what the Utah Jazz will do? WELL TO start with, thats a loaded question. In reality who can predict what this organizationwill do. Last year I would nfever have guessed they would draft Dan Schayes as their top pick but they did. In : any event, heres what I honestly, at least in my gut, think will happen. To start with, the Jazz have the number three pick in the draft. The top three names mentioned are James Worthy, Terry Commings and Dominic Wil-- : kins. Those three will go in the top three picks. Then ; comes the big question, who takes who? THE LAKERS have first pick. Theres justice for you, the best team gets the best player, so theyll : take Worthy. James is a 6 10 forward who likes to : run, just what the Lakers like. Hes the best talent in : the draft and the Lakers wont pass him up. Then comes the San Diego pick. This is a tough : one to call because many feel Cummings at 6'9 is a : better forward and player than Wilkins who is : The problem is that Wilkins plays the style of ball the : Clippers play better than Cummings does. I 67. IN ANY event the Jazz really cant lose out. No matter which one is left the Utah team has someone : who can help. Personally I hope the Clippers take : Cummings then the Jazz will get Wilkins and make indi-- l : him a guard. Many professional scouts have The make the switch. ball to control the cated he has in with a the killed the teams big league by : Jazz get this is so addition their 67 since biggest : guard 64", :to the backcourt would be welcome. : Wilkins, who played at Georgia, has been compared to Dr. J. That means the guy can fly. He has routstanding leaping ability and even if the Jazz leave : I him at forward he could still help with the re- bounding. IF THE Clippers take him then the Jazz still has Cummings who helped DePaul this past season. Terry is a basic power forward. The Jazz management has been crying for years about this spot so maybe now well see if theyre right. Guess what though? After their first round pick, the Jazz doesnt get to pick again until the third round, where they will have two picks. Those two picks are numbers 49 and 59 so dont count on any real help from those guys. BEFORE THE draft on June 29, look for the Jazz to trade a couple of people. If I was a betting man look for Ben Poquette and Darrell Griffith to be gone. The Jazz will trade for a big person or a high draft pick. Griffith has made no secret that he wants out of Salt Lake and the Jazz realize now is the time to trade if they want anything in return. Darrell even ' put all his belongings in storage when he left for the summer which usually means the athlete is expecting a change of address. AS FOR Ben, hes about the only other player who is marketable in the league. Milwaukee has tried for several years to get him, so have several other clubs. Its not that Ben isnt doing a good job, far from it, hes a great team player and the teams that play team oriented basketball want his services. So my predictions will be: look for the Jazz to trade several players. Theyre trying to get Bill Cartwright from the Knicks. Hubie Brown loves players who play team offense and good solid defense, so Poquette would fit in there nicely. THEN WATCH the Utah team get either Teijy Cummings of DePaul or Dominic Wilkins of Georgia. Hopefully the latter since he could help more. As for my final prediction. Watch for the Jazz to pull off some mystery move. Dont dig up any surprises. Youd be surprised how many hundreds of miles of telephone cables are buried all over this area.
