Show I I 1 I Throngs of people no longer stampede the bleachers. Coaches5 whistles no longer shriek die air. Another year of athletics has been called due to graduation. In the years to come, seniors will kick back and relish some exciting athletic performances. in an easy-cha- Keith Duncan Reflex Sports From summer basketball camps to the final hand off in the mile relay, preps at Clearfield, Layton and Davis can call the last sports season, another one in the bag. ! . THE MEMORIES stashed away are many. Some were glamorous and hard to forget while others will probably never be relived, but only in the minds of those who witnessed them. I should say that I had the most fun of all. Being able to capture portions of the sports year on the sports page, has and always will be a thrill for me." IT ISNT my intention to leave anyone out as I take a moment to reflect back on the sports year, but there are some thrilling events that will be hard to forget. The season started on the sidelines of Clearfield Highs football field. The Falcons were hosting the Viewmont Vikings in the first nighttime game ever played at Clearfield. It wouldnt have mattered if the two teams playing were two little league teams from Syracuse, I was just excited to see another football season come into view. IT WAS my privilege to become good friends with Gary Hansen of Layton, Brent Hancock of Clear-- I field and Ward Sawley of Davis, all coaches. J To me the thrill in the air at nighttime football games is uncomparable. The nighttime games at Clearfield and Davis were fun for a lot of people and Im happy to see that Layton will have lights this coming fall. THE MOST memorable game for me was the nighttime encounter between Davis and Bountiful. The seesaw battle for the rights to the Region Four crown looked like it was all Bountiful's in the closing minutes. But with only seconds left, senior Ben Home lofted a perfect pass to his senior buddy, Spencer DeGraw, and after the 97 yard scamper, the game was history and Davis went ape. My enthusiasm was at an all time high and just in time for Clearfields Doug Kopecky to glide through . In these few short paragraphs its the hardest thing to do to describe the way it really was, but perhaps youll get a glimpse. another undefeated season in wrestling; for Bruce Frodsham to start his wrestling schedule like a ball of fire, and for the Clearfield girls to make it all the way to the state finals in basketball. YES, CLEARFIELD, Layton and Davis, all had ' their share of success during the wintertime. Layton could get excited about the Zamora brothers in wrestling or both basketball programs, both of which eventually made it to the state tournament. It was great to see how move-i- n Keith Williams adapted so well to Doug Moons team. The Darts were blessed with the services of 64 guard Brian Taylor who seemed to score with ease and give assists just as well. Taylor, along with guys like Kirk Storey, Brent Lange, Kris Cottrell, Troy Anderson and Doug Werhli, made it to the state tournament when most people thought they had little chance of doing so. For Mike Gardner it was just another super year. JIM DICKSON and his Davis wrestling team were always battling. They too were one of my favorites. Ive always been fond of Clearfield basketball, mainly because of what Roger Reid did when he was there. Well, the Falcons did it again. They had another glorious year even though they couldnt defend their region crown. They did, however, post their best finish since 1970. - : ir THE GUY I probably respect more than most is Clearfields John Flint. This gentleman and professor of track and field is in my words what high school athletics is all about. He took another group of kids this year, some 60 or more to be exact, and let them live for something again. En route his kids won the schools third straight region championship and came within a point of winning the state title. Flints teams at Clearfield have now won 67 consecutive dual meets. At Layton I also learned to appreciate Russ Jones and his efforts in track. With just a handfull of kids he kept on plugging and finished very respectable in region and state. GUYS LIKE DeGraw, Brian Wright, the Cooper brothers (Mike and Myron) and others will not be forgotten in the hearts of many. Their superb performances in track and field not only went down in the record books, but in the school of big hearts. There are other sports in spring like baseball where the Layton Lancers finished with another winning mark but were cut off by Bingham in making a bid for the state tournament. , ' TALK ABOUT dedication to a sport. I believe Clearfields Scott Tennis is unsurpassed in wrestling. Of course his fortunes were made a little brighter with guys like Kopecky and Steve Ulibarri around. The two Falcons will always be some of my DAVIS SOCCER enjoyed a tremendous late-- 1 season tournament streak and were able to finish among the states top four. The list is endless with memories and experiences and I can hardly wait for another school year to start. Thanks Clearfield, Davis and Layton for making it what it was, unforgettable. favorites. As far as girls basketball, the Falcons were terrific in making the state finals. In fact, the entire girls season at Clearfield was a success . I CANT leave out Ann Avondet of Davis because this gal is genuine in everything she attempts. She led girls like Allison Horsley and others to a volleyball crown; much success in basketball and another brilliant year in track and field. The Falcons, with guys like Jeff Schofield, enjoyed a fifth place finish in the state tournament. i t v J . d j ' ' X ? if j 'J , .. mm- f Davis Ben Horne (LEFT) gets bumped by Alta in the state playoffs, while Kenny Heath lets loose with pitch for Layton (CENTER), and Melba Tyson, (RIGHT), clears hurdles in girls Region One track were all part o a dramatic athletic season in North Davis County. - nmtsxw?- WW'WWW WgH-- I mA r ' ' Q .1 Avi ' " if ( X it-- Xl ; tl M :v 7 I - J ' J v wm yv , ' f i DU-- r " , 0 ' i - " O' I''" v V , I , i f -'- -x H Si i 7 F 1 i ffi s " vv'Xy " i ' i m ? s :: x i if x 4 K li s r ?? 1 jrl in k.W..' sj ife- " i t A, |
