To keep the roots from growing out of the drainage holes in the pots, a layer of gravel or shards should be placed at the bottom of the pot, covering the hole, and the pot can be turned every once in a bly. There is some controversy on the ject of just how to go about placing The Sap has risen in the trees, the smoke of barbecues is wafting in the suburban air and many of us are looking forward to spending a great deal of time outdoors in the coming weeks and months, if only in our own backyards. Likewise, our houseplants, which have given us so much pleasure indoors through the winter, would enjoy a summer sojourn in the outdoors. Indoor plants which normally enjoy sunshine indoors, like geraniums ana bouqainvillea, can be placed in a sunny spot outdoors. Most, however, will need a more protected spot in filtered light A situation under trees is ideal. At our place, we have a spot under subhou- seplants outdoors. Some advocate taking the plant out of its pot, for the sake of developing a stronger root system and a much larger plant by fall This method makes it a bit trickier to bring the plant back indoors at the end of the summer. It will involve root prunning and a period of adjustment to the confines of a pot again. But if I had a very little palm, fern, citrus or some small foliage plant that I wanted to fatten up into more of a specimen plant for the fall, I would certainly take it out of its pot for the summer. But most good-size- d houseplants such as philodendrons, citrus, ferns, palms, open-branch- while to dislodge any errant roots. There are, however, certain house-plant- s that I take out of their pots to place in the gardea These are the ones that are easy to take cuttings from. Fibrous begonias, for example, make a nice display bed for the summer. During the winter and early spring I regularly cut my begonia plants back and make cuttings. By this time each year I usually have enough for a nice bed of them. Then, in August, I begin to take some cuttings from the begonia plants which by that time are quite fat These cuttings make my new fall and winter houseplant fibrous begonias. I follow the exact same procedure for my ordinary geraniums (not the Martha Washingtons). We enjoy patio pots of geraniums on our sunny patio during the summer and in the fall we bring them indoors where they flourish during the winter by the patio doors. We enjoy letting them grow tall like lush tropical trees, then 1 butcher them and take lots of cuttings. In no time the parent plants are tall trees again. Other houseplants that I take out of their pots, to plant in filtered light outdoors, are impatiens, ivies, pothos. New winter houseplants are made with tip cuttings of these taken in the summer. These need protection from both direct sun and wind. Give special attention to watering houseplants still in their pots and fed them regularly with a balanced water-solubl- e plant food. d plants like gloxinias and African violets are now placed outdoors but do be sure they are protected from the summer sun indoors.
