Show If WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- VIS r I J I NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JUNE 10, 1982 Dave Wigham Reflex Journal Bulletin Leader Sports No Slbme In Goiig To A Jirnior College It seems to me that in past years graduating high school athletes were almost ashamed to admit that their only scholarship offer in college was to a junior college. Seemed to some it was a cut to the ego to have to admit that the four year people didnt look at year but the question still remains would they see more at a junior college? The junior colleges in this area have really built up reputations for themselves. Last year Ricks and Snow both went to bowl games and were nationally ranked in football while Dixie and Snow did likewise in the basketball world. Utah Technical College in Provo was the dominant baseball world as they missed their national championship series by a couple of games. them. IM NOT so sure that the junior college process isn t the best route to take. One of the reasons for that is the fact that in many sports the four year people dont have a junior varsity or a freshman program anymore. Take basketball as an example. Dan Bell of Bountiful is heading to Dixie Junior college and a change to play in about thirty or more ballgames next year. You tell me any other school that could offer him that. Sure he could enroll at a four year school and ride the pines for the first year or two, but isnt it better for him to go play somewhere. schools, anytime you can get your education fully paid for then go for it. But by the same token Im for the junior college scene in these parts. I recall several years ago a group of football players from Layton High that not many four year schools looked at. Well off they went to the various junior colleges in the state and after two years all seven of them finished up at the same four year school, SUSC. THIS PAST week I had the opportunity to interview a couple of local athletes that went the junior college route. Kevin Kott was the quarterback at Bountiful when the Braves took the state title in 1980. He decided to go to a place where he could get some playing time and now hes considered one of the best junior college passers in the land. Dave Draper wasnt highly recruited out of Woods Cross a couple of years ago but the right hander chose a junior college where he could play and now he has the credentials that interest the major four year people. TRUE THERE are other examples in the other direction. Im sure John White and Brian Taylor will see action at their resiective four year schools next LAST YEARS state champion, Julie Ryan from Gymnastics of Salt Lake City, repeated as state champion in the senior division. Using the statistics from Woods Cross High this past season Coach Mitchell proved soccer could support itself. In five games this past year, all played under the football lights at night, the Wildcats averaged just over $100 per game. Those five games about suiported my entire program for the year." noted Wildcat coach Kevin Rigby. The Davis County schools are well prepared to accept soccer since the District already has paid coaches in their schools. "This District has proven that soccer can work and isnt a big financially burden continued Rigby. 7 SALT LAKE CITY - By a narrow margin the Legislative Council of the Utah High School Activities Association voted to accept soccer as a recognized sport for the coming school year. Craig Hammer did the same via Dixie and then the U of U. These guys that are heading to the junior colleges this year will be hot items in a couple of years. How many times have you seen a playei all of a sudden become a hot commodity when two years before that no one wanted him. WITH THE local four year schools going after the have all gone to the out of state athletes the junior colleges around the state and the results have been amazing. These junior colleges, you know little old Snow, Dixie, UTC, Ricks and College of Eastern Utah, are turning out some of the best athletes in the nation. Gymnastics F ederation The 1982 U.S. Gymnastics Federation State Championships were held at Bountiful High School. Nearly 40 of the states best Class II gymnasts were entered in the two days of competition. Friday was the compulsory session, with girls competing in childrens, junior and senior divisions. On Saturday, the optional routines and team titles were concluded. AT TIMES I look at the local athletes, from the state, that are on the squads of four year schools and wonder just what type of career they would hav e had at a junior college. Some of them have even indicated to reporters that they wish they had accepted the junior college offer and had the opportunity to play IM NOT against scholarships from the four year . - jponr G) Defected Ghoe And Gportcnrcnr Cl enrnnee zt Or 5053 iqjury.
