Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JUNE 10, 1982 High Time: CTZ313 and South 0 degrees 32 NOTICE OF West 300.38 feet along said TRUSTEES SALE By FLORENCE BITTNER gle, call out. Hey, will you please straighten out this line Make no mistake about it, standing in line is not something most people do well. Probably few have realized the skills needed for effective and efficient line standing. so I can see where were going? People instictively respond to this kind of general orders. Its a holdover from having their mothers call to them from the front porch. They may not even be aware THOSE OF us who have made a study of techniques belong to an exclusive group. We know each other, having our secret recognition signals, and we know better than to invade the line occupied by one of the professionals. People get very possessive about their lines. The British call them queues, and they have a high profiency in this art, but queue or line, the skill demanded for effective standing in one is international. There is an appeal about a neat, orderly line which calls to the more civilized instincts. This is a developed art, an acquired skill. We wont see your native bushmen or oboriginies standing neatly in line. They crowd and shove and push any whichway and that is one of the things that makes them uncivilized. Well bred, cultured people never shove. They wait patiently till it is their turn. then have received and re- sponded to an instruction. ONE OF the subtleties of line standing not generally known is the friendships which can be made while waiting. It takes a real professional to visit while waiting in line. The skill is comparable to talking to people in elevators, and thinking of something to say is an art. Your general comments such as nice day isnt it or have you finished your Christmas shopping yet don't usually bring out more than a grunt. You have to get their attention. Now, if its the first of May and you ask if theyve finished their Christmas shopping, that will be a real conversation opener. You can go from there to where the best sales are and how many children-grandchildre- n they have, to comparison of shopping juana versus Canada. LINE STANDERS dont like those little numbers which tell you when its your turn either. It takes all the fun out. You can take a number, go off and do the rest of your shopping, and come back about the time they get to you. That doesnt take any skill. You may need an outrider to let you know when your number is coming up, but you dont need any skill. FIRST, OF course, is to spot a disorderly, scraggly line and in Ti- THE TRUE professional makes some lifetime friends while line standing. Another bonus of line standing is the The following described property will be sold at public auction to highest bidder on the 9th day of July, 1982 at 10:30 A.M. at the North front door of the Davis County Court House at Farmington, Utah in the County of Davis, by SECURITY TITLE COMPANY, as Trustee under the Deed of Trust made by James R. Rasmussen and Lois H. Rasmussen, his wife, as Trustors, and recorded June 2, 1977 as Entry No. 463419 in Book 652 at pages 132 of the Official Records of Davis County, Utah, given to secure an indebtedness in favor of First Security Bank of Utah, National Association (now owned and held by First Security Bank of Utah, N.A.) by reason of the breach of certain obligations secured thereby. Notice of Default was recorded January 27, 1982 as Entry No.608188 in Book 891 at page 458 of said Official Records. Then you find out what youve been standing in line for. Ive come home with some of the most amazing things I didnt know I needed, like the East Indian Insense Burner I bought last July from the line I found in a boutique mall. And the Icelandic wool tea cozy I found at the head of a line of a street vendor. That was the line where I met Samanthy. We call each other on the phone regularly to keep abreast of where the best lines are forming. Shes turned out to be a real jewel for sales tip. Then there was the line which ended up with me buying an airline ticket to Portugal. It was alright, I cashed it in and didnt go. I understand they have very few lines in Portugal. YOU SEE, thats the real fun of line standing. Finding out what your waiting for. No pro- fessional would dream of asking. You just let it come asa surprise, and sometimes it really is. One day I nearly enlisted in the Coast Guard, but they said I was too short. Well, maybe next line. Meaning What? Most men don't love what a girl stands for but what she falls for. HAROLD LIGON infuriating to the professional than to have a dawdler ahead in the line. Invariably this ingate will wool gather, visit, read or snooze and let a gap develop in the line. There is a law which states that any gap in the line will immediately be filled with bodies. So remember, never let a hole develop in the line. How do you prevent holes? There are techniques the professional line stander can do to keep the line neat and properly spaced. The most effective is the subtle crowd. What you do is gently lean on the dawdler. Invade his air space. He will give you a dirty look, but he will instinctive!' move ahead to fill in the gap If you are not immediately behind the dawdler. the technique still works. Lean on the guy just ahead of you. he will react by moving ahead, and so on until the gap has been filled. There is a household, everyday. commonly used, universal word with which just about everybody is familiar, but practically no one can define! The word is calorie. THE CALORIE we all know (and love) is actually termed a kilogram calorie, or a kilocalorie. and it is defined in the medical dictionary as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water one degree Centigrade." That's highly technical, but for our general purposes we can define a calorie as a unit of heat from which a certain amount of our body's energy is derived. In this terminology we can therefore relate the role of calories in meeting the physical demands of our bodies. AS MOST of us know, calories enter into our lives through THE PUSH and shove to the aboriginies is a litle harder to deal with. The best technique when a shover gets into the line is probably to announce that they are all out of whatever you are waiting for. That failing. you can try dirty looks. throw-bac- k Not usually very effective since this cross person probably never meets eyes. Sometimes you have to revert to scathing remarks such as, How did you get way up there? I was here first." Your line may devolve into a brawl because others will take up the chant. You can be sure that if you are annoyed by a a shover, others are also seething. PLAY UPON this and you will get enough support from other line standers to bring the shover into control. You must realize this individual is not your shy, sensitive type and will not respond to gentle techniques, so dont worry about offending him. Its probably not possible. Dealing with this type of person comes under an entirely different heading. Please refer to the chapter on How To Deal With Boorish People. Another thing you must watch for is that your line remains reasonably straight. Lines which wander tend to s which somedevelop times results in people who came last getting served first. In an average healthy and normal adult, each pound he daiweighs calls for 5 calories ly in order to stay there. Therefore. a 100 pound adult needs 1500 calories daily to function and maintain his weight. 1 , SIMILARLY, a 200 pounder needs 3000 calories to do the same. These calories should come from balanced fats, car- bohydrates. and proteins, rather than from a single source, such as ice cream, sserts, etc. de- Bible Verse erty; thence North 0 broadcasting, cable TV, and supplying information from their own data bases via computer terminals. This insophisticated two-watelevision teractive, call-u- p service and the transmission of information via a home per- sonal computer system are two dynamic sectors holding great potential for increasing the revenues of the newspaper publishers. The Research Dept, of Babsons Reports expects the expansion of the communications base by newspapers to result in a number of mergers and acquisitions of smallei newspaper publishers who do not have the resources to compete with the entry into the electronic and video media. Despite the deepening business recession, the stocks of the leading newspaper publishers, down from their highs, now appear to be especially attractive for purchase. TOTAL newspaper advertising revenues are expected to rise to $24 billion by 1985, up considerably from the $17.5 billion recorded in 1980. Likewise, a marked advance is forecast for the growth in net revenues for the industry from a little over an estimated 8 $19 billion last year to billion by 1985.
