Show f I 1 REFLEX JOURNAL BULLETIN f LEADER AUGUST 12, 1982 Champion Of The Video Games 5 K AYS VILLE While some 14 year olds get Iheir kicks from playing baseball during the summer, others get their warm-weaththrills from visiting Cherry Hill and the waterslide, but young Cary Rakes can enjoy all that and more simply by amusing himself and others, while he tames a video game. THE VIDEO game boom has arrived and Rakes, is one of many, who has capitalized on the excitement the games have brought. . Last week at the Kaysvillc Arcade, Young Gary broke his own record On "Dig Dug" (one of the top ten video games) by amassing over 380.000 points. He says that the record he set at the arcade may still be broken. THE QUARTER he deposited enabled him to play the game for at least 20 minutes. A crowd gathered to cheer him on. Gary also holds four top scores on four other games in the amusement center. Rakes, w ho more or less has made a name for himself in the competitive video game world, says he has been playing the games for over four years. "My parents, Delmont and Brenda Rakes of Kaysvillc, dont mind me playing as long as I can break the habit when 1 want to," Rakes added. The family has lived in Kaysvillc for five years. "I MOSTLY learned how to play "Dig Dug" from some friends of mine. I was terrible in the beginning but gradually learned some patterns from them and got better," he 'mmm ; said. r Rakes finest hours in the video game world came when he broke seven million at a game called "Asteroids." The 14 year old sat and played this particular game for a grand total of 14 hours. c- !SI . iWi, Scoring victories in the Natalie Bowman tennis tournament were back. Dave Aamodt, left.
