LOSING ISNT a part of what we're all about. We know how to lose because its happened to us in our history before, and it hurt deep down inside. But mainly we go out each week not thinking about winning or losing, but we just try our hardest to improve from the week before. We Keith Duncan Reflex Sports Undefeated and region KAYVILLE champs in fine.) said Brian Bock, Davis fine middle linebacker and studentbody president, But the best thing about our win over Bountiful is that we upheld our standards here at the school by talking with our pads, not with our mouths." BOCK KNEW there might be some cheap shots thrown and play wouldn't be its cleanest against Bountiful, but he believes the Darts held back and gave that department their best effort ever in the team's 2 win over the Braves. Were the type of team that if we got on top early, it would help us becuase we are an emotional team and we can fluxuate a little. just keep working hard, working, working, and working. Were very mentally tough that way, said Bock. BOCK WAS asked about how he felt as a team leader a few days before the Darts first game against Ben Lomond. I knew we'd do well at the first of the year, mainly because ofourget-after-i- t, type attitude. Everyone was going on the same note, there was just a good feeling on the team. I knew later on that would held us win some close ballgames, like our win over Bountiful. But all the time I never dreamed it would turn out like this, he said. nt 20-1- IF YOU looked at our team, the hard core facts, you wouldnt have thought wed do that good. Our line averages 160, maybe 165. Our team speed is good, but not exceptional. There isnt a thing on this team that would make us look omnious and powerful enough to go undefeated, but deep down inside we had it. AND WE DID fluxuate. We had a second quarter letdown but came back with a lot of character after they'd scored on us twice. We could have lost and still been region champions, but character is what we had in coming back. Bock might still be in a daze about 1982 and said it might take a pinch to wake him up to reality. COACH (WARD) Sawley kept building it (Editors Note: Junior lineman JefT Sampson has had quite a season for himself and he took a moment to describe last week's happenings and the upcoming playoff picture.) . Youd knock his head off and hed help ya up and say, Way to g- In the first half against KAYSVILLE Bountiful, I was dead, said Davis Jeff Sampson. At halftime though I finally woke up. Coach (Ward) Sawley said some things that had to be said. "We werent even supposed to be close and Who wanted to how would it be for us to go I wanted to be undefeated and be tied with nobody. Sampson, who was lucky if he got an assisted tackle in the first half, came out storming in the second half and helped propell Davis to victory. THE KIDS slipped into neutral fora quarter, said Sawley, But they got motivated at halftime and came out the second half and rose to the occasion. Sampson had plenty of respect for the 5-- 0. - si LOOKING BACK on the season, Sampson had some thoughts about it all. At the first of the year, I had my doubts. After losing to Skyline, I said to myself that the only way wed be able to do something, is to work hard because were so much smaller than everyone else. Against Skyline I took a good look at my play. I hadnt done that bad on defense, but on offense, blocking wasnt my strong point. I SET SOME standards for myself after that game, just like everyone else did. Each week Ive tryed to get better and finally against Bountiful (second half) I was doing pretty good in some of my blocking situations, he said. Sampson was cautious about the Cyprus game and said, We didnt get here by pure talent, it was hard, hard work. In preparing for ' 20-1- 5-- up inside of us fhat we "could be good if we worked hard. If we didn't, then we wouldn't do anything. He was telling the papers that on the outside we just didnt look like a team that could defend our region championship, and he was right, Bock stated. Now the playoffs. Bock admitted that in his past two years at Davis, the Darts hadnt been able to pull off a victory in the first round. But I think were positioned to change that this time, said Bock. I DONT know what Cyprus has, but well be ready for them. I think last year our team here decided that once they beat Bountiful, the season was complete, that theyd reached their goal. BUT THIS season we want a little more, to go a little further and I think that kind of feeling is helping us out right now. With a winning football team, Bock says his studentbody responsibilities may be a little easier mainly because the students usually get behind a winning thing. PERSONALLY hes made some football growth as far as knowledge of the game is concerned. He admits that he can read the offenses better, especially right before the snap. He leads the team in tackles but as he says, Im not far ahead of the lineman up ahead of me. They have been a big key to our season. them it will have to be the very same way. SOMETIMES YOU can visually see that we are in better shape at the end of a ballgame. The coaches have been a big part of that. Theyve driven us hard, worked us and have bred a philosphy in us. Maybe weve got a little lax over the past couple of weeks. Weve got to remember the things that got us here. I know we cant overlook anybody or we might get blitzed. AHEAD for a moment to next year, Sampson appeared a little excited about it. It hasnt been on my mind too much (thinking about his senior year), but well start our countdown again with the bunch of good sophomore players coming back and we might have a good chance of doing this all over again. The sophomores are big and theyre good and I expect a lot of them to start. Well have some too in case somebody goes great back-up- s down. Davis SUGARHOUSE PARK - To no ones surprise the Davis girls ran away with the region cross country title here last Wednesday with a team score of 29. The big surprise though was the second place finish, with 50 team points, by the Viewmont gals. AT THE first of the year I really didnt know if we would have a team or not this season. Then as the year wore on these girls just got better and better. This second place finish is a great credit to the girls, they put in a lot of hard work and its nice to see it pay off Coach Lynn DuBois beamed. Wendy Hunter was right in the thick of the race with a good third place effort with Julie MolyNeaux in fourth. Viewmont's top finisher in the individual race turned out to be Sheila Fairbanks who was fifth but teammate Rhonda Hadley was right on her heels to place sixth. Denise Horsley of Davis was credited with a seventh place finish while Aimee Anderson of Viewmont closed out the local girls who placed in the top ten. All ten of these gals qualified for the state meet as individuals, as well as members of the top three finishing teams. OTHER RUNNERS for the Vikings were Barbara Nielsen (12), Jill Bunting (17), Kari Soleberg (19), Sandra Colby (22), Julie Rasmussen (37), Miriam Camps (42) and Carla Pack (45). For the Darts their other runners were Jennifer Davis (13), Karen Lee (21), Darlene Stockton (25), Kelly DuBois (27), Josie Lopez (32), Jenny Jensen (38) and Rebecca Hawkins (44). ALTHOUGH Bountiful High didnt field a complete team of seven runners the Braves were well represented by Donna Jordan who fought all the odds and placed 24th overall. With no other girls working out it would have been easy for Donna to have just given up on cross country but she stuck with it and showed courage and determination in doing so. BOTH WRITERS feel Bonneville should beat their opponent (either Bingham or Taylorsville). Keith has them by 10 and Dave by 14. Having seen Sky View play and respecting them for what they have, Keith picks the Bobcats to beat Hillcrest by 6 while Hillcrest has Daves vote by 3 points. BRIGHTON should be an easy winner over Weber is the opinion of both Dave and Keith. Keith has them by 12 and Dave by 16. Both agree that Viewmont will beat Granger, Keith by 8 and Dave by 14. AGAIN THEY both agree that Olympus should get by East. Dave has the Titans by 8 while Keith has them by 14. |
