It brings a quality to living unequaled in most of the Morld, Public education has played a significant role in creating a castclcss society. THE NATIONS public schools educate all children, whether they be black or white, rich or poor, handicapped or disadvantaged. They allow all of America's young people the educational opportunity that could be afforded by only part of Americas citizenry just a few generations back. This election has been termed by some as a turning point for our nation, our state, and our local communities. Hundreds of Davis County teachers will be hoping for such a turning around in education w here Utah's high class loads are the largest in the nation, where student growth places excessive strains on building budgets, where needed classroom aids are in v short supply, and w here salary levels can no longer attract and retain quality educators in the classroom. SUCH A turning around in education may not be accomplished in such an easy manner as being suggested by massive media campaigns from both political parties. But it can be turned around through the canelection of didates who have a genuine interest in preserving educationn al opportunity for all and who have the courage to face hard issues and lead out in their solution. There are far loo few such leaders in our present political system. Cutbacks and budget limita- tions are very popular campaign issues, but they solve few, if any educational problems in a time of such massive student growth in the schools. WE NEED the political leadrealizes that our investment in children is one that er who No On Prop. 7 Who wins, who loses. No one wins and everyone loses if Proposition No. one passes. HOUSEWIVES, if this proposed legislation is passed, you will be paying much more on every purchase you make, due to the increase taxation forced upon the business community by passage of this bill. You will pay more for groceries, shoes, clothing, furniture, hair care, entertainment, gasoline, car repairs, etc. NATIONALLY over 600 businesses quit weekly. Why? No profit! And now this prop- - 1 St.Marks Gardens Sets Bazaar VOTE fSStS PAULINE MCBRIDE I J I (Davis County Treasurer) ) msw 0m s C to tm Ms,.arw .,.. THIS IS an election of hard issues. Utah's students and educators w ill look to voters to make informed choices on election day in school board, and congressional legislative, osed legislation will in many cases cripple, or force an even higher rate of businesses to quit. Then we not only lose their services, w e lose their tax dollars, and we add unemployment to our economy. Our beautiful malls will pays big dividends. Also one who understands the negative impact economically, educationally, and socially that the passage of tuition tax credits would bring to this nation's public schools. (Tuition tax credit proposals have been around for more than a century and have always been rejected by the majority of Americans and their representatives. Apparently only one of Utah's Congressmen. Jim Hansen, represents Utah's opposition position on this issue as Utahns indicated in a recent poll.) Students would be better served by a balanced Legislature of men and women from both political parties and where such important educational issues are debated in open caucuses and committees w hich are not manipulated by a few. The passage of Constitutional Amendment No. I as recommended by the Legislature will be helpful to Utah schools. races. David H.
