Show FEBRUARY 16, 1983 FALCON BASKETBALL Layton Hits the Road to LOT Test Roy Friday : I : Season This For Fight - Coach Craig Hansen isnt CLEARFIELD next thinking of year, not even for a moment. With little chance of making the 1983 4A tournament, Hansen is dogmatic about going through the final prep games of this season with nothing on his mind but to win. ! I DONT CARE if we havent won a game, well fight right down to the finish for a victory, LAYTON Without the kind of punch that kids like Keith Williams and Jeff Passey can give, Layton basketball sputtered and spurted last Friday night, enough in fact for Weber to hand them their third consecutive loss. I CANT GIVE up on these guys and I dont think they want to give up. The best players, whether they are seniors or juniors, are going to be in there playing for us, continued Hansen. With that kind of philosophy resting on the final two games, Hansen will lead his troops in a home game this Friday against Sky View and next week on the road against Roy. i J THE DISAPPOINTING defeat at the hand of the Warriors completely shattered Laytons hopes of winning the region title and makes it more difficult for them to land one of the four tournament. spots to get into the Williams left the prep team earlier in the week due to personal reasons and it appears he will not return. Also missing was Laytons sixth man, Passey, who left the weekends ac-tion due to a trip with other Layton student- body to California. 4-- A THESE two fellows and com- bined with the performance of their : senior center, Brett Campbell, it just wasnt " the kind of Lancer basketball squad that fans here have been accustomed to. Layton was to host nearby Clearfield in a : game T uesday evening and following that were to hit the road for a game at Roy. Layton will I wrap up the season with a contest against Bon-- c is pro- neville next Tuesday. That wrap-u- p vided that they dont get an invitation to the tournament. .' WITHOUT nt WERE STUCK in a pattern where we get out to a slow start and have our problems trying to get back into ballgames, said the Falcon coach. Such was the case last Friday at home where a 20-- 8 surge by Bonneville left Clearfield clawing from the first quarter on, to get back into the game. ITS HAPPENED in nearly every league game, said Hansen, Weve gotten off to real slow starts and have struggled like crazy to get back into games. Its just too hard to come back against the good teams weve got in this region when you find yourself down by 15 points, he said. BUT IN EVERY league game, Clearfield has fought back and nearly pulled a few of them out. In six games the Falcons have dropped in league play, its been by a total of 23 points. Its not so tough to come back and get back into the game, but to come back and win, is a very difficult thing to do, stated Hansen. If I knew exactly what to do about it, Id take care of it, he said further. THE FALCONS have attempted some real aggressive defensives but that has been diffi-- 1 cult because they havent been making baskets. Combine that with some of the outstanding performers in the league, guys like Sie Moore and Reid Newey, it makes it doubly difficult to win. Moore dumped in 33 points against Clearfield last Friday which left him averaging 30 points a game in league play. THE COACHING staff takes the responsibility for our losses, because the kids have been doing what theyve been asked to do. Their working hard in practice and doing everything possible to make it happen, said Hansen. Clearfields tandem of juniors have continued to play well and thats why they are starting recent games and seeing much of the action. Junior guard Jeff Parry had nine points against Bonneville, center John Crotzky had 13 and forward Hal Schofield had another eight points. THE JUNIORS at times have been outplaying the seniors. But Im still pleased with our BUT DESPITE the mirage of problems that t beset Doug Moon and his remaining troops, he : claims he was quite optimistic entering the We-- - 5 ber game. The kids were very anxious to play and I I ; though we outplayed them. We outscored ? them by seven field goals but could hit only 1 1 ;of 26 from the line. Even an average night of t freethrow shooting would have won that ball-- J game, said Moon. Weber claimed the win by : out scoring Layton 53-5- 1. P : YOU CANN T expect to win basketball : games by shooting just 30 percent from the ; freethrow line, stated Moon, That was the ;ballgame. Moon summed it up best when he said, : Youve just got to bite your lip and continue :to get after it. v THE LAYTON coach was very pleased with : the efforts of Brad Merrill who ended the con-- : 5 test with 14 points and his own sons effort, Jeff : who tallied 22 for the evening. : Two Lancers saw their first varsity game of : their careers in James Beauregard and Darrell : Martin. James is a junior and Martin is but a sophomore. eff Moon from Layton slips through the Warrior defense for two points. the Lancers fell short of a win by a mere basket as the season nears the Inish. ' Jut ' ; MOON IS hopeful that tournament fever can grip the kids and cause some exciting things to happen in the remaining weeks. Its r something for the kids, something Id really like to see them be a part of, said Moon about the tournament. 1 Davis Travels to Highland Friday Former Lancer Shawn Campbell, Heads For WSC OGDEN - Shawn Campbell, who sprang out of Layton High in 1979, may be playing college basketball a little closer to home next season. -- THOSE ARE three of the Dart juniors and ; : one sophomore that have seen a ton of action in And the action theyve been part of has ; been full of royal nightmares like what took SHAWN IS the son of Mr. and Mrs. William HE HAS SEASON highs of 26 points (vs. Utah State Junior Varsity) and 19 rebounds and Sonya Campbell of Layton.
