FOR THE Clearfield High wrestling prog-- . ram, Scott Tennis is one that doesnt like to dwell on the future. He had high hopes for a number of kids as last season came to a close, but none of his dreams for them ever came true. But it might be a little different when the winter of 84 rolls around. Tennis, who has been the head coach for the past five years, has some genuine kids that he can get excited about. AFTER AN embarrassing 1982 state tournament, where Robinson entered as a region champion, he turned the tables and stung five opposing grapplers with losses that theyll remember for quite some time. The Davis High junior may have been the happiest kid in the western hemisphere after beating Altas Gary Gordon for the state title. Perhaps the only people quite as happy or happier, may have been his own parents, his coaches and his teammates. THE FALCONS took eight wrestlers to the state meet last week and the three that placed were all juniors. Some other impressive juniors missed placing but their chances for a brighter next year look better too. Shad Ragan at 1 12 received the highest placing. He did well enough to place fourth in that bracket. 1983 ROBINSON BEGAN the tournament by defeating both Daren Day of Roy and Russell Adamson of Kearns by pins. John Jones said he wasnt even in the mood to wrestle after losing 0 to Brian Richardson of West Jordan in the semis. Richardson went on to the finals where he was beaten by the same entry that Jones had beaten to win the Region Four title. But Jones did come back the final day to beat his last two opponents and conclude an impressive senior year of wrest155-pou- It will be (top) a day that 145-pou- Davis Shawn Robinson will remember forever, when he stood in the state championship light. 2-- s. ANOTHER PROUD junior is Rick Herdt who took sixth in the 1 19 bracket. As soon as he had placed, he raced to the nearest phone to call his brother Doug who was a wrestling great with the Falcons and is just leaving for a ki ls I NEARLY HIT rock bottom at the View-moTournament when I only took sixth place, said Ragan as we conversed about the past season. But I finally got some things going and though I didnt do the things I planned, my state performance has me jacked up for next season. Ragan won three state matches and lost two. Two of his losses came from kids who eventually placed higher, like David Lucero of Cyprus who won the state and Todd Norton of Brighton. He claims that Gordon beat him at Layton and Viewmont because hed I countered it this time by putting in t. a leg and cross bodying him. I simply beat him set-ou- to his own moves. I thought I had him stuck on a move that I took a chance on. I learned from last year that I couldnt be conservative anymore, that I needed to try everything I knew, said the state champ. ROBINSON CLAIMS he will wrestle 119 most of next year and finally drop down to 1 12 for the state meet. Coach Dickson is one reason why I have never quit. Because if you were to quit, its like facing my own dad. He has been a big factor in my surgence, he said. TERRY AND Katherine Robinson are the proud parents of the new state champion. , Dickson commented after the victory, think Im shaking like a leaf after that, its exciting for Shawn. .I MAYBE ROBINSON was embarrassed be- cause of last year because he knew he was better than that. He came to the tourney this year excited about showing people he was a better wrestler. I think too the revenge factor was important. But it was Shawns confidence that caused both Bruce (Bitner) and I to believe he was going to win. After awhile we didnt think there was any question. BITNER, THE assistant coach said, He has taken a goal at a time and achieved what most kids just dream about. Nate Hinckley was the only returning letter-ma-n to have placed in the 1982 state meet.
